Little by little, the days are getting warmer. What to wear from now on is the question on everyone's mind. Many people love one-piece dresses but feel a bit hesitant about wearing them alone, directly against bare skin.
During the warmer months, many people want to dress in a cool, breezy way while still keeping exposure to a minimum. Sleeveless dresses and ones that show the legs are lovely, but they come with a lot of things to be mindful of, and often end up sitting untouched in the closet. Also, because a one-piece dress completes an outfit on its own, coordinating with it can easily become monotonous. Sometimes an item you loved and wore often ends up feeling like something you've simply grown tired of.
That's where layering items come in handy. By adding a single layer over a one-piece dress, you can wear your favorite clothes in many different ways, and even rediscover the appeal of pieces you'd lost interest in as your tastes changed over the years. Let's take a look at some specific examples.
Here are some handy items that let you wear your clothes in many different ways. We've selected leggings, thin cut-and-sew tops, petticoat pants, and gathered skirts.
Leggings
Ono-shiki Furisu Leggings (BLACK)
When it comes to layering, leggings are the classic choice. Breezy one-piece dresses and skirts can feel a bit unsettling on windy days, and leggings come in handy whenever you'd rather not show too much bare leg. To wear leggings stylishly, choosing the right pair matters a great deal. In particular, be sure to check the "design" and "material" carefully.
For instance, a design with some ease that doesn't cling directly to the shape of your legs, or one with ribbing that creates a lengthening effect, or a patterned pair that adds a nice accent when worn with a plain one-piece dress, are all easy to style.
Choosing a material that doesn't generate static electricity is also important. It's not a good look when your skirt clings to your legs with static as you walk. Static electricity occurs when fabrics made of different materials rub against each other. For example, synthetic fibers (aside from rayon) don't pair particularly well with natural materials, and combining polyester with wool or nylon is said to easily generate static. However, hemp, cotton, and silk are relatively resistant to generating static with almost any other material, so it helps if either your dress or your leggings contain hemp, cotton, or silk.
Thin cut-and-sew tops
Super120s Wool Crew Neck Top (ICE GREY)
A thin cut-and-sew top that works both on its own and layered is also incredibly useful. We selected pieces excellent both as standalone tops and as inner layers, whether worn under a sleeveless dress or tucked beneath a shirt.
Mini Pile Border T-Shirt (BLACK/WHITE)
Petticoat pants
If you're wearing a thin spring or summer dress or tunic and worry about sheerness, this is one item you'll definitely want to have on hand: petticoat pants. A simply-cut one-piece dress is lovely in its unpretentious ease, but during this season, it's easy to worry about the shape of your legs showing through under strong sunlight. A shiny, obviously-inner-layer petticoat can be embarrassing if it's glimpsed by accident. These wide-leg petticoat pants are neither leggings nor a petticoat, but something lovely to be seen even if it peeks out.
Linen Petticoat Pants (Albatre)
Gathered skirt
Linen Tiered Skirt (LILAC)
A gathered skirt that looks lovely on its own can actually be used to layer over a one-piece dress as well. A pleated skirt doesn't spread out sideways much, so it won't add visual bulk when coordinated into an outfit. Rockmount's tiered skirts come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, and peeking out from the hem, they look charming. URVIN's denim pleated skirt also pairs nicely with crisp, structured fabrics like shirt dresses.

From here, let's look at some actual layered coordinates.
Leggings are an item you'll never regret owning. Wear them under a one-piece dress in spring and summer, and secretly slip them on under wide pants when it gets a bit chilly in autumn and winter, as a way to guard against the cold.
We paired leggings with a Toudaki herringbone linen shirt dress, dyed using a kettle that's been in use since the Edo period. Since the style shows the ankles, we kept the look clean with sabot shoes. The thin border cut-and-sew top also works nicely as part of the layering.
What we used here is ZUTTO's original Ono-shiki Furisu leggings. These leggings are actually designed so they don't cling tightly to the calves, allowing for a comfortable amount of ease. With a shape that tapers gently at the ankle, they're easy to wear even in the heat of summer, making them a handy piece to own.

We paired blue leggings with a HAVERSACK dress known for its distinctive sleeve design. These are from Tenimuhou. From a series of kusakizome (plant-dyed) pieces that was already extremely popular at ZUTTO, we specially ordered this deep navy logwood dye, which is easy to wear outdoors. It gives a fresher look than using black, and it's also handy as an inner layer for loungewear.
Coordinate items:5oz CHAMBRAY Dress(BLUE 1)、Basket S/NAVY、Classic Red
A summer black dress styled fresh with the addition of small accessories. The breezy wool-silk leggings are from Tam Silk and have a border pattern. It's charming how they peek out from the hem of the dress.

A sleeveless dress worn in midsummer is wonderful. But you may want to wear it in spring too, and some of you may not want to show your upper arms just yet this year. If that's the case, try pairing your sleeveless dress with a thin cut-and-sewn top.
We paired a tartan check linen dress with a refreshing cream-colored cut-and-sewn top and a canvas bag. The Super120s wool cut-and-sewn top is 100% wool, but it's thin and breezy, with an excellent feel against the skin. Wool is sometimes called a natural air conditioner, and a thin wool cut-and-sewn top can be worn year-round. It's especially handy when you want to wear a sleeveless dress in early spring, as it helps you avoid feeling chilly.

Pair a border T-shirt with a solid-color dress. Simply adding a pattern gives a completely different impression to a plain, minimal-looking dress. For your feet, scrunch down thin black socks and add a stylish touch with dansko's classic sabot.

Depending on personal taste, age, and the passage of time, our feelings about dress length change. There may be a dress you've loved and worn for a long time but have gotten a little tired of wearing alone, or one you used to love wearing that now feels a bit short to wear today—for all sorts of overlapping reasons, isn't there a piece still sitting in your closet? Add linen petticoat pants to that dress, and you can wear it again with a fresh feel.
Pair linen petticoat pants with a linen salon dress worn layered like a gilet. Modeled on an antique French work coat, the salon dress is lovely on its own, but when you're concerned about showing too much skin, it's nice to adjust with a T-shirt or petticoat pants.

Layer petticoat pants with a jersey-material dress too. White petticoat pants give any outfit a fresh look.
Coordinate:SWEAT JERSEY Cotton Dress(KHAKI)、CANVAS/LEATHER Waist Bag SMALL(OLIVE DRAB)、Leather Sandals W1628 CUOIO
A coordinate where a gathered skirt peeks out from the slit hem of a dress. This time we chose brown, but Rockmount's tiered skirts come in various colors like yellow and purple, and they offer excellent versatility for mixing and matching.
Coordinate:DARLEEN Honeycomb Dress(NATURAL)、Cotton Stole AQUARIO(WHITE)、WALSH Sneakers Horwich BLK/PLUM/GRY
A shirt dress that looks great on its own. Leggings and skinny pants are lovely too, but pairing it with a pleated skirt gives a different atmosphere.
Coordinate:Striped Shirt Dress(GREY/SIZE FREE)、Sneakers Tennis leather White
Layered items give you the chance to wear your favorite clothes in different ways, or to bring back a dress you once loved and enjoy wearing it again. Why not try adding, little by little, pieces that seem like they'd go well with what you already own?
