Many of you probably own quite a few leather accessories that can be used regardless of the season. Their durability means you can enjoy them for years, and they change and develop character the more you use them—that's what makes them so appealing. Those who love leather goods also tend to pay close attention to their maintenance.
Well-maintained leather softens and fits comfortably in your hand, yet never looks dirty—it has a lovely sheen and stays gently moisturized. This time, we'll introduce the basics of leather goods maintenance using cleaners from TAPIR and brushes from REDECKER, both of which are available at ZUTTO.
Here are the basic tools you'll need.
a.Läder Pflege Creme (Leather Care Cream)
A cream-type moisturizer. It picks up easily onto cloth and spreads smoothly, making it great for beginners. It gives just the right amount of moisture and shine. The refreshing citrus scent makes maintenance time all the more enjoyable.
b.Leather Waterproofing Spray
Protects against water droplets, leather's biggest enemy. It's convenient to use on leather goods, shoes, and bags, as well as suede and velour materials.
c.Läder Balsam (Leather Balsam)
A wax-type product with a stronger shine-enhancing effect. It's also recommended to apply by hand—work it into the leather as if kneading it in, then finish by massaging the leather.
d.6-Piece Shoe Polishing Set
A set of five brushes with different sizes and bristle firmness, plus a cotton flannel cloth. It comes in a drawstring pouch, making it easy to store. A soft-bristle brush from this set can also be used for maintaining leather goods.
【When Should You Care for Your Leather?】
Just like human skin, leather needs a good balance of oils and moisture. The most important thing is using and touching it daily, supplying it with the moisture and oils from your hands—and indeed, the areas that get touched often tend to stay less dry.
However, the areas that rub against things often are prone to scratches, while the areas rarely touched become increasingly dry. Dryness shows up as whitish patches, so use that as your guide for when to care for the leather. Also, beyond just addressing dryness, be sure to clean off dirt and apply waterproofing
whenever needed.
A slightly dry condition. Areas where the leather is folded are prone to cracking, so extra care is needed there.
【Let's Start the Maintenance】
1. Empty the Contents
The first step in maintenance is to remove everything from inside. If contents are left in, you won't be able to spread the cream evenly, which can sometimes lead to uneven staining in spots.
2. Remove Dirt
Wallets, pass cases, and key cases that you use often accumulate dust and hand grime over time, so gently brush them with a brush. Pay careful attention to seams and pockets.
3. Moisturize
Take some Läder Pflege Creme on a piece of cotton flannel and spread it thinly and evenly. For leather with a pronounced grain, spreading the cream in small circular motions helps it reach into the texture.
*If the cream is applied to the leather while still in a clump, it becomes hard to spread evenly, so it's easier to first spread it flat on the flannel before applying.
4. Let It Rest
To let the cream soak in, leave the item for about 10 minutes in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight.
5. Buff
To bring out the shine, buff the leather with a dry cloth, using gentle stroking motions. Right after maintenance, the leather may feel slightly tacky, but this disappears quickly once you start using it again.
【Points to Keep in Mind for Effective Care】

Areas where the leather overlaps or is folded are heavily used spots in everyday handling, making them prone to both scratches and dryness—so focus your care efforts there.
【Small Daily Care Makes a Big Difference Later】
For leather shoes, a small bit of care right after coming home goes a long way. Keep a shoe brush by the entryway and give your shoes a quick brushing as soon as you get in. This removes dust, sand, and mud right away, preventing dirt from setting in.
Even on days when it's not raining, shoes are the leather item most affected by moisture. Make a habit of applying leather waterproofing spray to guard against both water and dirt.
【Maintenance Brands Featured This Time】
This brand was born out of the frustration of "not being able to find a wax I wanted to use on my own cherished shoes." At the time in Germany, there was no wax made purely from natural materials, so the founder succeeded in creating a 100% natural wax based on an old recipe.
The brand is deeply committed to its materials, using only organically grown or non-GMO plant-based ingredients. Its waxes spread easily even in small amounts, and each one is designed to restore the leather's natural suppleness.
This is another long-established German brush maker. Each brush is carefully crafted by hand by skilled artisans, and the more you use them, the more they fit your hand and the more attached to them you become. Today, the company handles not only brushes but also various cleaning tools made with different types of bristles, and each product is praised not only for its outstanding functionality but also for its simple design that fits naturally into any space.
