We at ZUTTO, who have introduced all kinds of items to you as a select shop, are also "devoted users" facing these very same worries. In this reading, we'd like to share a hands-on care report from the perspective of us ZUTTO staff members as everyday users—what might be called a true last resort for "what do I do in a situation like this?"

This time, we're taking a look at a pair of "white calf shoes worn to exhaustion" that one of our staff members has been wearing year-round.

These days, we find ourselves wanting to pair ballet-style shoes with skinny denim or shirt dresses. Let's take a look at how these calf shoes have changed over the course of a year of daily wear.

~A white companion worn without a break for a full year~

First, let's introduce the "favorite item chart" we gathered by asking the staff member who wears them.

【Item Introduced】

・Item: CATWORTH Flat Shoes JazzShoe White

・Size: 6/25cm

・Material: Calf leather

・Duration of use: Exactly one year, since March of last year

・Frequency of use: Year-round, regardless of season. Worn without fail 2-3 times a week. Since they're lightweight and don't take up much space, they're often packed in a suitcase for trips and business travel.

【Daily Care】

No particular care has been given. Since these were purchased with the idea of "wearing them casually, again and again," I've kept wearing them without any real maintenance.

【Points of Concern, Worries】

・The dirt on the toe area has become noticeable. That said, compared to when they were brand new—all white and smooth—they've developed a pleasant character, so I feel they're at their very best right now. Since they're white shoes, dirt shows easily, and my current concern is how to keep them looking as they are now for as long as possible.

・I'm concerned about the creasing from wear and the loss of shape. My feet are naturally on the larger side, so they felt a bit tight when I first started wearing them, but after a year, the leather has broken in and now fits my feet well. Whether it's a downside of the leather having broken in (that is, stretched), the shoes themselves seem to lose their shape after I take them off following long hours of wear.

What you only notice when comparing to a brand-new pair

This time, since the wish was "I really love how they look now, so I'd like to keep this character while wearing them for as long as possible," we decided to first compare them with a brand-new pair to see exactly how the texture had changed. Once you start using an item, you rarely get the chance to compare it side by side with a brand-new one, but looking back at the accumulation of time—almost like traveling back in time—you often realize, "Wow, it's aged this much already."

The most noticeable changes: wear at the toe and creasing

Comparing them this way, the changes around the toe area really stand out. The toe area is, after all, the face of the shoe. Also, since the area over the instep stretches and contracts with the movement of the foot, you can see horizontal creases forming there as well. Because soft calf leather is used, it seems that once it absorbs moisture, creases tend to set in permanently.

That said, as the staff member who wears them mentioned, a brand-new pair of shoes has a somewhat blank, featureless look to it—having a bit of dirt or creasing actually makes them look more charming.

By the way, upon closer inspection, what the staff member had assumed was "dirt" turned out not to be dirt at all, but rather "abrasion" of the leather. From a distance it looks like grayish grime, but zooming in reveals that the texture of the leather itself has changed due to friction, and it doesn't come off even when rubbed by hand. Besides the toe, this "abrasion" was also visible on the inner sides of both shoes, where the right and left foot rub against each other.

Changes in silhouette revealed by "the back view of the shoe"

There's one more thing you can really appreciate through comparison: the change in silhouette around the heel. Compared to the new pair (left), the one worn for a year shows leather that has become noticeably softer and limper, with a rounder overall form. When we asked the staff member about this, she said, "The leather itself was already fairly soft, so I never got blisters even from the start, but after wearing them for about six months, they seemed to grow even softer."

The strength underfoot: does sole wear become a concern?

One thing that concerns people about shoes is the wearing down of the outsole. No matter how pristine the upper looks, if the outsole becomes too thin, the shoe can no longer function properly. The CATWORTH Flat Shoes JazzShoe White have a sole covered entirely in a fine, grid-patterned texture, and when we turned them over to look, we found wear on the underside of the heel and the ball of the foot. This, too, is one form of the gradual change that comes from being worn well, day after day. However, even though the sole is worn, the grid texture remains intact, so it seems there's no problem continuing to wear them as they are.

Just like a true-or-false quiz: asking the professionals for the correct way to care for them

The ZUTTO staff understand the basics of shoe care, but when it comes to "a white calfskin leather shoe that's become worn and soft," what maintenance would be ideal, or how far the care should go, remained uncharted territory.

So we decided to ask people knowledgeable about caring for leather shoes. We spoke with the importer/wholesaler who always introduces us to CATWORTH shoes, and the importer/wholesaler of Tapir, the specialist shoe-care brand also carried by ZUTTO.

【What is the official care method?】

When leather receives a strong impact or repeated friction, the surface of white leather can wear away, revealing the grey base material underneath. With short-term use this kind of deep wear usually doesn't happen, but since you mention wearing them daily, I imagine what you're seeing isn't dirt but rather the grey base showing through where the surface has been worn away by friction. In that case, there's a method using a color-restoring agent matched to the leather's color, applied on top to make the scuffs less noticeable.

Compared to the new pair (photo above), there's about 1-2mm of wear on the heel.

The JazzShoe in question here has its outsole and insole finished with adhesive, so physically an all-sole replacement is possible. However, since sole replacement involves the process of "peeling off the original sole" and "attaching a new sole," this inevitably puts stress on the shoe itself. Because the shoe wasn't built with an all-sole replacement in mind, I'd recommend avoiding friction as much as possible and wearing them with care, and then when they truly reach their limit, either doing an all-sole replacement or reinforcing the areas where wear is most noticeable.

【Which care items should be used for white calfskin leather?】

Among the care products that can be used on smooth leather, "Leder Fett" offers the strongest waterproofing and stain-prevention effect. However, with white, matte-finished, soft calfskin leather, if you don't choose the care product carefully, the color and texture can change. Compared to Leder Fett, the waterproofing effect is milder, but you might also try a leather waterproofing spray. This is a spray-type care product that can also be used on nubuck and suede leathers. It's not suited for leathers that readily absorb oils, like nume leather, but for the leather you're asking about, I don't think there would be any problem using it.

Even calling it "leather shoes" as a single category, there are actually many different kinds of leather, so of course you should choose a care item suited to your purpose, and always test it on an inconspicuous spot before treating the whole shoe. Results vary not only by the type of leather but also by the color, surface finish, and how the shoe has been used, so please try caring for it little by little while observing its condition.

A gentle "stitch in time" to take care of your shoes

From everything we've heard so far,

・The basics are "preventive care" to minimize stains and wear

・Once the shoes truly reach their limit, depending on their condition, it's possible to do an all-sole replacement or treat the worn areas to restore color

These two points turned out to be key. In other words, doing preventive care regularly, like "a stitch in time saves nine," seems to be essential for enjoying white leather shoes for a long time.

When we asked a staff member who actually wears these shoes regularly, they commented, "The slightly scuffed, grey-tinged areas are actually part of what makes me attached to them, so ideally I'd like to take care of the leather while preserving the current character, and prevent further staining." So we decided to hold off on "sole replacement" and "color-restoring treatment" for now, and instead try the "preventive care" that would help us wear these shoes carefully going forward.

The maintenance items we used this time

Used to remove stains from the shoelaces and the fabric tape used at the shoe's opening. This time we used The Laundress's Stain Solution, which has a strong stain-removal effect.

A shoe cream that gently removes dirt. We used the colorless type.

The Leder Pflege Creme also has a waterproofing effect, but this time we also used the waterproofing spray as a finishing treatment.

Keeping the silhouette beautiful is a basic part of shoe care, but as with these soft calfskin leather shoes, a shoe tree that applies strong force to stretch the leather isn't suitable. So we substituted an appropriate amount of stuffed newspaper instead.

What happens when we try the 4-step care routine?

① Correcting the silhouette with newspaper

Remove the shoelaces and stuff in the newspaper. Applying the cream moisturizes the leather, making it supple and easier to stretch, so it's important to do this care while the newspaper is still inside.

② Wipe-clean the fabric tape at the opening

Take an appropriate amount of fabric detergent onto gauze, and wipe-clean the fabric tape at the opening with a light tapping motion. Then wipe off the detergent with gauze dampened with water and firmly wrung out. (Be careful not to get any detergent on the leather parts!)

③ Removing dirt and moisturizing with leather cream

The Tapir cream used this time is labeled as a "colorless" type, but it's actually a cream color with a slight tinge of yellow. As advised by Tapir's wholesaler, I tested it on an inconspicuous area first before applying it to the whole surface. Since the leather, originally pure white, had already changed slightly toward a cream color through daily use, applying the cream did not cause any noticeable color change. For matte leather like this, there's no need to buff it up for shine. The key is to spread it very thinly and evenly with your fingers.

④ Finishing with waterproof spray

Spray the waterproof spray evenly from a distance of 20-30cm, then wipe off any excess liquid with a soft cloth. The moment right after this whole care routine is when the leather is most moisturized and supple. Adjust the amount of newspaper stuffed inside to help correct the silhouette, and let it rest for a while.

Wash the shoelaces separately to get them bright white

Going through this whole care routine, one thing you shouldn't underestimate is the shoelaces. This is a surprising blind spot—once laced up, shoelaces rarely get a chance to be removed. There are several spots that tend to get particularly dirty: the parts facing outward while laced up get soiled easily, and dirt tends to accumulate where the laces cross over each other. This also makes the shoes themselves look less presentable.

Removing them periodically and washing them with detergent and water will make them look remarkably cleaner. When washing, smoothing them straight with your fingers while rinsing helps correct any kinks in the laces, giving them a more beautiful look once relaced.

So, how did the care turn out?

Here are the shoes with the laces relaced after completing all the care steps. The right is before care, the left is after. You can see that the creases on the vamp have improved and the overall form has settled nicely. While keeping the scratches and character of the calf leather intact, the shoelaces were cleaned of dirt to a bright white, giving the shoes a crisp, sharp impression.

"Like new" isn't always the best goal

This time, the care was approached from the perspective of "doing everything possible in terms of self-care to keep enjoying these shoes for a long time to come, while making the most of their current character." As introduced in the main article, if wear progresses further down the line, options like resoling or touching up worn areas with color are also available.

Aging gracefully and simply deteriorating are similar but different things. There's beauty in brand-new, gleaming shoes, and there's also beauty in shoes worn soft and supple over years of use. White shoes, white shirts, white handkerchiefs... For white items, dirt and deterioration are an inevitable fate. But when it comes to beloved items you spend every single day with, restoring them to "like-new" condition isn't necessarily always the best approach. Perhaps there's something to be learned in adopting a mindset of self-care that allows you to gracefully accumulate time together with your belongings.
