Leather goods are known for being durable and developing more character the more they're used, but the "character" that leather products take on is something the owner, watching it change over time up close, can appreciate more than anyone else.
Il Bussetto, an Italian leather brand, makes small leather goods using high-quality cowhide. Their items are easy to hold, functional, and yet very simple in design. Put another way, it's precisely because of this simplicity that the changes in the leather become so noticeable. This time, we're focusing on Il Bussetto's business card holders to take a closer look at the character that leather goods develop over time.
Il Bussetto is a leather brand that started in 2004 in Tuscany, Italy, a region known for its thriving production of small leather goods.
The brand uses carefully selected materials guaranteed by Il Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (the Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium), with leather tanned using plant-derived tannins blended according to a secret formula. Some products employ a seamless construction method that has long been passed down in Italy, resulting in a surface with no visible stitching. In addition, by using a special tool called a "Bussetto"—the very tool the brand is named after—the products achieve a beautiful sheen so glossy that reflections can be seen in the surface.
Il Bussetto offers a wide range of items, including wallets, coin cases, card cases, business card holders, and pen cases. All of these products are extremely durable, resisting wear even when packed full or used repeatedly. Above all, leather tanned using the vegetable-tanning method changes in various ways depending on how it's used by its owner. In contrast, chrome-tanned leather—tanned using chemical agents—shows little to no change in the leather itself over time. The way color and sheen shift under the influence of one's environment and habits of use is something unique to vegetable-tanned leather. Through continued use, you can truly experience the leather's aging process and its reliable durability.
Now, let's take a look at the character that leather develops, using Il Bussetto's business card holder as an example.
Il Bussetto's bifold business card holder has a very simple design: a smooth exterior with a pocket on the inside. Its basic, unisex appeal lies in the fact that it doesn't stand out too much, allowing the qualities of the high-quality cowhide itself to shine through. The glossy surface and the soft, moist texture to the touch truly symbolize what makes Il Bussetto distinctive.
Left: brand new / Right: a well-loved item used for 5 years (color: red)
ZUTTO has its own devoted user of this business card holder. A staff member, back when they had just started working, was drawn to leather as a material and chose this piece, thinking, "I want this to be my go-to item." It's a treasured piece for them. Drawn to the vivid red color, they've carried it in their bag almost every day since purchasing it.

Since it's been used continuously for 5 years without any particular maintenance, its appearance has changed significantly.
The most noticeable change is in the color of the surface. When brand new, the smooth surface, nearly free of any scratches, is coated evenly in a bright red. After 5 years of use, however, the color has taken on a somewhat more subdued tone. Scratches are also visible on the surface, likely from contact with keys or a notebook inside the bag. There was also an unexpected incident about six months after the owner started using it: they got caught in a sudden downpour, and part of the business card holder got wet. The reddish-black area visible on the right edge is a remnant of the color loss from that incident, though it has become less noticeable now, blending in with the overall change in color.

The change in color is especially clear on the inside. Since the interior is left unpainted in its natural state, the changes over time are plain to see. When new, it has the bright, whitish tone of natural leather. Gradually, through use, it darkens in color, especially around the edges of the case where fingers most often touch.

What you notice strongly when you pick it up is the softness of the well-loved item. The brand-new one, without a single wrinkle, feels firm and taut overall—so much so that the flap tends to spring open on its own. As you can see when placing them side by side, the well-loved item has become noticeably lower in height and has taken on a softer, more relaxed texture.
Also, when you hold the well-loved item in your hand, you can feel how the leather has molded itself to fit the hand. Perhaps because the owner tends to hold it by pressing their thumb near the center of the case, there's a slight indentation where that pressure has been applied. Over the course of use, the owner's habits—how they hold it, how they open it—have directly shaped the leather itself.

Having spent 5 years together with its owner, this business card holder has become one that truly fits the phrase "molded to the hand," both in appearance and in feel. Because the owner moves their hands the same way each time, the leather itself has changed shape to make it easier to take out business cards. The way "ease of use" emerges through use may well be one more form of the character that leather creates over the years.

This is a beloved item that's been used without any maintenance up until now, but supplying oil is essential for leather. Small leather goods like business card holders, which are frequently touched by hand, rarely dry out completely thanks to the oils transferred from your hands. Even so, as dryness progresses, surface scratches become more noticeable, and in severe cases, this can even lead to cracking of the leather. If you want to use it longer, and if you're seeking more beautiful aging, the key is to regularly replenish the oils.
This time, we used TAPIR's Leder Pflege Creme.
◆TAPIR Leder Pflege Creme: A German-made care cream for leather goods. Made only from natural materials including beeswax and carnauba wax, it has a citrus scent. A small amount spreads well and also produces a glossy shine effect.

First, wipe the entire surface with a soft cloth, then take a small amount of the Leder Pflege Creme on a cloth or your finger. Work it into the leather using small circular motions. The key point is not to take a large amount of cream at once, but to apply it carefully little by little. Once you've carefully worked it into the entire surface, let it dry well in the shade for about half a day.

Left: Before care Right: After care
The difference in appearance before and after care is clear. The color takes on a slightly deeper tone, and above all, scratches become much less noticeable. The care method for small leather goods, which don't tend to accumulate stubborn dirt the way shoes do, is very simple. Even so, just a little extra effort can make this much of a difference.
Oil is essential for small leather goods. As with the heavy rain our staff member encountered, if the leather gets wet by accident, the oils in the leather can be stripped away, resulting in a harder texture, fading of the dye, staining, and if moisture remains for a long time, even the growth of mold. For this reason, the best approach for small leather goods is to avoid getting them wet as much as possible. Still, if it does happen to get wet, first wipe away the moisture with a soft cloth, open the business card holder, and let it dry thoroughly. After that, we recommend caring for it with a cream that replenishes the oils.
The business card holder introduced here has long been a popular standard item at ZUTTO. But business card holders aren't only for business professionals. In their home country of Italy, they're often made as card cases, so they can hold all sorts of cards besides business cards.
For example, it can fit point cards or cash cards used at various shops. The bifold type has multiple pockets, so you can sort and store cards by type. Also, the largest pocket has excellent capacity. When we tried putting in 30 business cards as a test, it held them without any problem. Despite its simple design, it's actually filled with thoughtful touches that make it easier to use.
Besides the standard bifold type, ZUTTO has also commissioned various custom-order business card holders from Il Bussetto. The seamless type lets you experience Il Bussetto's characteristic seamless construction. This custom-ordered business card holder, Seamless, features a design where the lid and body come apart, with rounded corners that show off the lustrous quality of the leather.
The body has a solid thickness, so it can hold plenty of business cards. It also comes with a natural leather divider, so you can separate your own business cards from those you've received. In addition to bright colors, we also offer deep tones like green and blue.
If you prefer a slightly unusual design, there's the vertical type with a button closure. Its color scheme carries a somewhat retro feel, and its slim vertical shape brings to mind a smartphone. Simply undo the snap button and pull, and the leather stretches so you can smoothly slide your business card right out.
The character that leather takes on is originally influenced by the durability and expression inherent in the material itself, as well as its naturally derived manufacturing process. From there, it shows a variety of changes depending on how its owner uses it. Those changes may be a kind of privilege understood only by those who keep using it. You'll get to experience that comfortable feeling of a piece having become, without your even realizing it, one of your everyday essentials.
