Tsuruya Shoten of Yamagata Prefecture, which produces storage goods and stools made of rattan, is a brand that we have introduced for many years. We are attracted to rattan not only for its simple and beautiful appearance that blends easily into our daily lives, but also for its high functionality as a lightweight and durable material. We asked Tsuruya Shoten to create a second ZUTTO special-order item, a version of their popular rattan basket with legs, based on our wish list of what we wanted.

To be placed in small spaces.

This is a [Bespoke] Rattan 3-tier depth slim rack. The depth of the 2- and 3-tier laundry baskets we have introduced so far is about 33 cm, so this item is about 8 cm slimmer than the previous ones. The staff member who planned this item is a fan and loyal user of Tsuruya Shoten baskets. We thought that a slim wicker rack that could be placed in a narrow entryway or hallway would make it possible to store few things I want to put here and there.

The [Bespoke] Rattan 3-tier Depth Slim Rack has a natural, unpainted finish that brings out the natural rattan skin so that it can be used together with the existing rattan basket series and the custom-made wicker stools. It is not shiny as you might imagine when you hear the word "rattan furniture," but white, matte, and light, so it goes well with wooden flooring in the living room and tiles in the entryway and kitchen.

Rattan is lighter and easier to handle than wood, and it can be bent easily, so it has long been used as a tool for daily life to make storage goods and chairs. Tsuruya Shoten's rattan baskets are made by hand through the entire process of "bending," "rolling," and "weaving," which gives them a warm, human touch. The delicacy of the Japanese people leads to the robustness and durability of the product, making it a stronger and longer-lasting item than expected.

The first tier of the [Bespoke] Rattan 3-tier depth slim rack is fenced all the way around, so it doesn't feel oppressive. The second and third tiers have a slightly lower fence in front to make it easier to put things in and out. The round decoration on the sides of the second and third tiers is worth noting. It feels even more out of place than the fence, so if you put your favorite sundries, figurines, vases, candles, etc., they can easily be seen from the side. Storage tools are for "putting things away," but this rattan three-tier depth slim rack is made to serve as a decorative shelf as well.

The solid wicker surface is white, relatively uniform, and beautiful, but that is not the only thing that catches the eye. The bottom of the basket has a perfectly aligned eight-piece weave that shows the precision and beauty of the craftsman's technique, and I marvel at the special technique used to bend the long rattan that integrates the legs, post, and handle. I am also fascinated by the attention to detail, such as the way the taped rattan is wrapped without loosening. When you see this product in your daily life, you will feel a little uplifted, and it is filled with the elements of attachment that you want to cherish.
