From Healthknit comes the Thermal King Waffle Crewneck made with a waffle-knit fabric. This material is a three-dimensional honeycomb thermal said to have been developed at the request of the U.S. Navy. Recreated from Healthknit’s archives known as the “Thermal King,” the piece retains a substantial hand while being finished lighter so it’s easy to wear on its own in the spring–summer season—perfect for the long summer months. Thanks to the three-dimensional knit, it offers excellent absorbency for comfort year-round. Constructed with a four-needle flat-seam machine to keep seam allowances from building bulk, it’s also meticulously designed for a comfortable feel.

Tracing the Origin

In 1900, as the American frontier era came to a close, Healthknit was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, as a high-quality underknitwear maker under Standard Knitting Mills. Benefiting from an excellent supply of quality cotton—Knoxville sits on the Mississippi River and grew as a hub of the cotton industry—and with integrated production from spinning to sewing, Healthknit created the world’s most standard underwear: the three-button henley. In the good old days of America, Healthknit was beloved as workwear by working men.
