Arne Jacobsen, the master architect known for creating the archetype of Nordic modern design. A special collaboration watch has arrived, born from the meeting of Jacobsen's watch—crafted by Denmark's most influential 20th-century architect and designer—and the sensibility of wire artist HAyU. This timepiece is a limited edition model available only at select retailers. It embodies the allure of the design world and the warmth of handcrafted artistry.
Bringing Global Design Within Reach
The "CITY HALL" series is based on the wall clock design created by Arne Jacobsen in 1956 when he built the Rudebjerg Town Hall. Characterized by a cool, minimalist design typical of the 1950s, it eliminates all unnecessary elements, offering a chic style suitable for both men and women. Its highly legible Arabic numerals and crisp layout define this timepiece, an enduring icon of Scandinavian design beloved across generations. The ARNE JACOBSEN × HAyU City Hall watch distills this timeless design into a 34mm case, offering an elegant presence that effortlessly blends into daily life. The first in the CITY HALL series to feature a yellow gold case, it pairs with a soft cloud cream dial for a skin-friendly look that can be worn elegantly regardless of gender. It has an art piece-like presence, perfect for the "slightly playful adult."
What do they have in common?
HAyU is an artist known for creating art that highlights the very essence of wire as a "line." Valuing the inherent texture of materials and the expression born of chance, they have produced numerous works where the artist's hand is palpable. In fact, Arne Jacobsen also used chicken wire (wire mesh), commonly used in gardening, to create his designs, including the famous Egg Chair. HAyU himself is an artist who began his creative journey with green wire used in gardening. Starting from the same material, wire, he says he felt a connection somewhere between Jacobsen's thinking and his own expression.
The ARNE JACOBSEN × HAyU City Hall watch incorporates the expressive lines of HAyU's signature wire art into the watch itself. Focusing on the leather strap rather than the dial, the classic "crocodile leather pattern" found on luxury watches has been reconstructed with a unique embossing that evokes the distortion and joints of wirework. The belt loop hardware features a part reminiscent of HAyU's wire art, while the inside bears a stamped logo in the style of an artist's signature. Preserving Jacobsen's worldview, this special watch resonates with art and design, enhanced by the warmth and playful spirit of HAyU's handcrafted work.
Arne Jacobsen, Master of Danish Design
Arne Jacobsen is one of Denmark's most influential architects and designers of the 20th century. He is known as the father of Danish design, having established the prototype for today's modern Nordic design. Chairs designed by Jacobsen, such as the "Ant Chair"—the world's first chair with an integrated seat and backrest featuring a three-dimensional curved surface—the beautifully lined "Seven Chair," and the "Egg Chair" with its gentle curves that envelop the body, continue to captivate countless people today.
"We should not create beautiful things, but things that are needed," said Jacobsen. His meticulously calculated products, embodying both a creator's and a user's perspective at a high level, are still highly regarded not only in Denmark but worldwide, even after more than half a century.
ROSENDAHL, dedicated to upholding and nurturing Denmark's traditional design heritage, acquired the manufacturing rights to the Jacobsen clock—a true Danish pride—and launched a revival project committed to faithfully restoring the original design. Acquiring one of the few remaining original clocks, ROSENDAHL invited designer Tate Villant—one of the successors carrying on the late Jacobsen's legacy—to oversee the project, realizing this collaborative creation.
