A New Everyday Style for Noto Jofu
Yamazaki Hemp Weaving Studio was founded in 1891 (Meiji 24) as a dyeing shop in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture, a former hemp-producing region. For over 100 years, it has been the only weaver to preserve the artisanal techniques of Noto Jofu.
Although Noto Joufu was designated an Ishikawa Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property in the early Showa period, the trend toward Western clothing led to a decline in demand for kimonos and a decline in the number of local artisans, leading to the fabric being referred to as "dying away." Despite this, many people still visit from other regions to learn the craft, so the kimono and accessory brand "Noto Joufu YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" was established to pass on the traditional techniques that have been preserved for generations to the next generation and to propose the value of Noto Joufu in a new era.
Produced by the only Noto Joufu weaver's workshop, "Noto Joufu YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" continues to create linen fabrics that blend into everyday life, using the unique kasuri designs and hand-dyeing techniques of Joufu, with the theme of "encountering Noto's traditional linen fabrics with the dignified everyday."
