This orishiki, known as a sajimen (spoon surface), features a subtle bevel on the edge. Its striking shape allows you to feel the wood's natural breathing. It's part of Aizawa Woodcraft's KITO series. The zelkova wood grain blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings of your home.
When you think of orishiki, you might imagine it as a tableware to place on a dining table, but it's not limited to that purpose. Its appealing appearance makes it a natural tool to reach for, whether it's used as a tray for serving food, to carry bread and drinks for breakfast, or even as a stand for a vase or tea set. It's a tool that seamlessly integrates into your daily routine, fitting comfortably into the flow of daily household chores and meals.
A Simple Orishiki that Reflects the Natural Face of Wood
Aizawa Woodcraft was founded in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, as a woodcarver specializing in lacquerware bases. Only artisans with an intimate knowledge of wood can create products that fully express the beautiful grain, color, and texture of wood.
As its name suggests, the spoon-shaped tray features slightly rounded edges. While maintaining a wide, flat surface, it feels soft to the touch. By not rounding the corners too much and avoiding unnecessary decoration, the strong grain of zelkova wood is quietly accentuated.
Zelkova is a durable wood that has long been used as a building material, and the color and luster deepen with continued use. It is a material that you can enjoy as it gradually changes appearance with each use as an everyday tool. The glass coating makes it relatively resistant to moisture and oil, and if it does get dirty, simply wipe it with a cloth or lightly rinse with water. It can also be used without worrying about solid wood.
Available in two shapes: round and rectangular.
The round tray's symmetrical shape makes it easy to place in the center of the dining table, and it remains stable even when holding rice bowls, soup bowls, and teacups. Use it to organize bread and cups during morning preparations, or place teacups and snacks on top to prepare for relaxation, subtly arranging the flow of your daily life.
The long rectangular tray is a convenient size for a single serving at the dinner table, with ample space to arrange plates and cutlery. It's reliable when carrying items from the kitchen to the table, and also useful for carrying them all to the sink after a meal.
No matter where you place it, the color of the wood harmonizes with its surroundings, making it a backdrop for your life. The longer you use it, the more the texture of the wood will change, developing a color that is uniquely yours. It's a tool that allows you to experience the comfort of spending time with wood during your daily meals and housework, and it also makes a great gift.
Bringing Out the Innate Beauty of Wood
Aizawa Woodcraft was founded in 1948 by Kenji Aizawa. He began as a joinery apprentice, then went independent as a woodcarver, crafting boxes as a joiner. He subsequently added more artisans and machinery, and grew into a versatile woodcarver specializing in bentwood, magnolia woodcarving, and carved wooden items. He continued to hone his joiner skills within the traditional Wajima lacquerware craft, and is highly skilled in all lacquerware applications except for bowls.
While working as an apprentice lacquerware craftsman, he felt that he was not fully conveying the inherent beauty of each wood, such as its color and pleasant texture. Therefore, all of his products are crafted with a finish that brings out the natural beauty of the wood. These body-friendly wooden products are made with the user in mind, and both children and adults can feel relaxed just by holding them.

AIZAWA Wood Works was founded in 1948 by Kenji Aizawa. Beginning as an apprentice of joinery, and he started his own company of woodworking and produced wooden boxes. Later, the company became a manufacturer that handles various wooden products, mainly wooden utensils. In order to take advantage of the original values of the wood, including the color and touch of each wood, AIZAWA Wood Works uses natural finish, such as walnut oil and beeswax, for its products.
