Celebrating the beginning of the year with a New Year's feast. Among the vibrant dishes and beautiful tableware, the "small plate" subtly enhances the presentation of the food. Whether enjoying a variety of dishes like osechi or simply adding a touch of elegance to your everyday dining, these small plates blend seamlessly into any table setting. To make these "supporting yet glamorous" small plates more accessible and long-lasting, ZUTTO collaborated with Sasaki Kogei from Asahikawa, Hokkaido to create this floral small plate.
A Touch of Wood's Warmth Amidst the New Year's Splendor
For the main dishes during New Year's celebrations, plates adorned with vibrant designs in red, gold, and maki-e are often used, creating a lively table atmosphere. To complement this, we chose rustic and expressive natural wood for the small plates, capturing the joy of the season through their shapes. The soft and delicate curves harmonize beautifully with the dining table, enhancing small side dishes like simmered vegetables, black beans, and colorful pickled vegetables. Even a plate just a few centimeters in size creates a stage for the food. That is the charm of these small plates.
Three Types of Flowers, Three Expressions. Wooden Small Plates Crafted with Sasaki Kogei's Expertise
This time, we have created three types of flower-shaped small plates, each with a unique expression, to gently accompany the New Year's festivities. They are modeled after the shapes of plum, quince, and dogwood flowers. The plum and quince symbolize auspicious flowers that brighten the New Year, while the dogwood represents gratitude, happiness, and permanence, making it perfect for celebratory occasions. Each plate showcases beautiful wood grain, revealing different expressions depending on the dishes served.
We offer four variations: a set with one of each of the three types and a set with three of one type. They come beautifully packaged, making them ideal as New Year's gifts for those who have helped you throughout the year, as well as for weddings or housewarming celebrations.
Small Plates Shine in Everyday Dining
These small plates are not just for osechi; they also serve as side plates, condiment dishes, and dessert plates in everyday dining. They are perfect for serving small snacks or arranging appetizers. On gatherings, simply placing several on the table creates a naturally lively atmosphere that encourages conversation. The lightweight wooden plates are easy to handle and less likely to break, adding to their appeal. With a urethane coating, they resist oil stains and discoloration, making them practical for daily use.
Craftsmanship from Asahikawa, Hokkaido
The production is entrusted to Sasaki Kogei, a workshop that continues to create wooden accessories in Asahikawa. They carefully select high-quality timber from the Daisetsuzan mountain range, producing stable quality while highlighting the individuality of the materials. Since its founding in 1976, the workshop has adhered to the philosophy of "living in harmony with nature," handling everything from material selection to processing and finishing in-house. Renowned as a center for Japanese furniture, Asahikawa is home to precise woodworking techniques and craftsmanship. Their commitment to discerning the uniqueness of each piece of wood and shaping it into tools that blend seamlessly into modern life brings a genuine richness to daily dining.
From special New Year's days to ordinary moments, may these small plates add a touch of color and warmth to your dining table.

We want to encounter things that we can continue to use with love for a long time and share the joy of meeting them.
ZUTTO is a select store that was started with this in mind. In the course of introducing a variety of "things," including things from Japan, things from around the world, things made by hand, things that focus on materials, and things that require technology, we sometimes find ourselves thinking, "I wish there were more of this kind of thing." We introduce original items made with a focus on the "more" part as the ZUTTO brand.
Our items range from clothing and fashion accessories to bags and kitchen tools, but what they all have in common is that they are made from materials and ingenuity that will make you want to use them for a long time. Materials that age and deepen over time make you look forward to the years to come, and semi-custom-made items that suit your tastes are easy to use and you want to keep them with you for a long time. We are a brand that supports "long-lasting use" from every aspect, with a system in place that allows for repairs and alterations whenever possible.
