The gourd shape features a gentle roundness and a pleasing curve that fits comfortably in your hand. It’s not too large, making it the perfect size to accompany your dining table. Ideal for when you want to add just a little extra soup, enjoy a warm cup of water after a meal, or savor a hot tea leisurely. The soft luster and light texture unique to lacquerware transform your everyday moments into something a bit more special. Each time you hold this delightful little bowl, you’ll feel a sense of warmth and relaxation.

Selecting Your Only Bowl
The lacquer bowl is made from zelkova wood, coated with lacquer. Lacquer is the sap that comes from making cuts in the lacquer tree, and its charm lies in the way it develops character with use. Because it is made from natural materials, each piece has its own individuality, and no two are exactly alike. Thus, even though the same process is followed, the effort required varies by piece, yet the high level of craftsmanship remains consistent, ensuring each bowl is made with care.
The process of making the bowl involves the following steps: "sourcing materials from the market > shaping to the ideal form > soaking the wood with lacquer to fill the wood's vessels (wood hardening)." The process is the same for all lacquer applications. For the "shin-nuri" technique, after the wood has been shaped, lacquer is applied and then polished, repeating this process to increase strength, totaling about 16 steps. Even for a single bowl, it is crafted meticulously through the hands of multiple artisans, including the wood shaper, the base lacquer applicator, and the finishing lacquer artist.
▽ Here are the characteristics of each lacquer type.
【Wipe Lacquer】
The visible wood grain gives a warm impression. Since the expression of the grain varies by wood type, it enhances the feeling of having a unique bowl.
- Wipe Lacquer with Raw Lacquer: This technique involves applying raw lacquer to the bowl and wiping it off repeatedly to finish.
- Wipe Lacquer with Black Lacquer: This uses lacquer that has been chemically altered to black by adding iron and heat, and like the raw lacquer, it is applied and wiped off multiple times to finish.
【ZUTTO Custom White Lacquer Over Black Base】
This is a special ZUTTO custom finish where the base is painted black and then finished with white lacquer. White lacquer contains a high amount of pigments (such as titanium), making it viscous and difficult to spread, requiring significant effort. The subtle brush strokes and variations in thickness directly reflect the character of the color, making meticulous work essential for a uniform and beautiful finish. This color is born from careful, painstaking craftsmanship.
【Shin-nuri】
Unlike wipe lacquer, this technique involves mixing diatomaceous earth and layering cloth, resulting in a very sturdy finish. Pigments are used for coloring.
【Light Color】
This is a special color requested by ZUTTO for the Only Bowl order event. It is slightly lighter than shin-nuri and closer to vermilion, making it more harmonious with the dining table. The coloring technique is the same as that of shin-nuri.
We also offer four other shapes, so please explore and find your desired combination of finish and shape.

ROKUROSHA is a wooden product workshop established by Yoshio Sakai, a master of wood products in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture. While he was born in Hokkaido, Mr. Sakai has moved to Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture when he joined a wooden product manufacturer. He has studied under Reiji Yamaguchi, and learned the skills as a woodworker. After leaving the company, he refined the technique under the guidance of Masayoshi Shimizu, a traditional craftsman of Echizen lacquerware, and in 2014, started the workshop, ROKUROSHA. The concept of the brand is "redefinition of value" in which products are produced with a focus on wood, without being particular about materials and manufacturing methods, while inheriting the technique of a traditional round wood block.
