As the rainy season approaches, it's not just the air in your room that you need to worry about. Drawers, shoe cabinets, storage cases, and under the sink can trap moisture, leading to lingering odors on clothes and shoes, and sticky floors or tatami mats. If you were concerned about condensation or mold last rainy season, want to maintain a clean state in your new home, or are cautious about using chemicals due to living with pets, the Sumihachi moisture-absorbing charcoal is an easy addition to your storage spaces for your precious items that you want to keep for a long time.
Just place it in your storage areas
The raw materials used are high-quality wood from house demolitions and coniferous trees such as cedar and cypress that are generated from factories. Coniferous trees have larger holes for absorbing water, making them effective at taking in moisture even after being turned into charcoal. Compared to hardwood charcoal used for binchotan, Sumihachi is said to excel in moisture absorption and was developed specifically for addressing humidity in homes.
The wood is chipped, and after removing metals and other impurities, it is sorted by particle size. It is then carbonized at a high temperature of about 800°C. With a carbon content of approximately 93%, it is less prone to mold and rot compared to wood, making it a major advantage that it can be used semi-permanently without needing replacement. For even better results, sun-drying it once a month is recommended. Since it does not use any chemicals, it is easy to use near clothing and in homes with pets.
The bag is double-wrapped in non-woven fabric to prevent powder leakage. It has also obtained a patent as a bag that allows air to pass through while minimizing powder release. This thoughtful design means that users are less likely to be bothered by charcoal dust when opening drawers.

Transforming construction waste into a resource that protects your lifestyle
Sumihachi is produced by Izumo Carbon Co., Ltd., established in 2001. The representative, Mr. Ishitobi, witnessed the reality that a large amount of wood waste generated during the demolition of a major local hospital was hardly being recycled. Charcoal has long been known for its ability to purify water and air, and to scientifically utilize this for addressing humidity in homes, they collaborated with universities and research institutions. Through this industry-academia collaboration, the moisture-absorbing charcoal "Sumihachi" was born.
With the philosophy of "solving humidity-related issues in daily life with the semi-permanent moisture absorption of charcoal," they aim to not just build but also transform the wood generated from demolition into a resource that benefits future living. Before rushing to clean up once the rainy season starts, place one in areas prone to trapping moisture. Although it's a small bag, it serves as a reliable preparation for keeping your home comfortable for a long time.
