The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated on a seaside hill overlooking the Øresund Strait, just outside of Copenhagen. Founded in 1958 by businessman Knud W. Jensen, the museum was established with the belief that "art should not be for a select few, but something everyone can directly engage with." It has become known worldwide as the most visited modern art museum in Scandinavia, showcasing works by iconic artists such as Picasso, Calder, Henry Moore, and Yayoi Kusama in a space where architecture, nature, and the sea come together. The A2 posters are selected from the archive of exhibition posters that Louisiana has produced over the years.
For those who want to display them right away, we recommend the following frames.
Design Born from Exhibitions
Since its inception in the 1950s, Louisiana's posters have been crafted by renowned artists and graphic designers for each exhibition. While they serve as printed materials for announcements, they are designed as part of the exhibition itself, featuring a consistent use of refined typography and whitespace based on Danish modernism for over 60 years. This is why Louisiana's posters continue to be appreciated as standalone works. The museum shop has received accolades as "the best museum shop in the world," with posters being a central item collected by people worldwide.
The two posters by Arne Jacobsen are from the exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth, held at Louisiana in 2002. One features an illustration from the "House of the Future," a future housing project presented by Jacobsen and architect Fleming Lassen in 1929. The other, "Skovshoved Gas Station," depicts a gas station designed in 1936, located in Skovshoved, a suburb north of Copenhagen.
The five posters by Anna Atkins are from the large exhibition "OCEAN," held at the Louisiana Museum in the fall of 2024. This exhibition, which begins with the phrase "We know more about the surface of Mars than we do about Earth's oceans," was structured around the intersection of art and science with the sea as its theme. Atkins was a British botanist and photographer who pioneered the application of photographic techniques to scientific documentation. In an era when it was difficult for women to enter the world of science, she uniquely combined botany and photography under the influence of her father. She employed the cyanotype technique, where seaweed is placed directly on light-sensitive paper and exposed to sunlight, resulting in the areas not covered by the seaweed turning Prussian blue, leaving a white silhouette of the seaweed. This method allows the seaweed to imprint itself onto the paper without using a camera or a paintbrush. Each of the five posters features different types of seaweed, including finely branched lace-like forms and feather-like spreads. While their shapes differ significantly, they all share a cohesive look with white silhouettes against a deep blue background. They can be displayed individually or beautifully arranged together.
The four posters by Haeckel are also from the "OCEAN" exhibition. Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist, philosopher, and painter, and his work "Kunstformen der Natur" (Art Forms of Nature), published between 1899 and 1904, includes 100 illustrations centered around marine life. Printed by lithographer Adolf Giltsch based on Haeckel's own sketches and watercolors, this work serves as a scientific record while overlapping with the aesthetic of Art Nouveau, significantly influencing architects and designers of the time. It embodies Haeckel's desire to share the astonishing beauty of nature that exists only in the depths of the ocean or under a microscope. The four posters feature motifs of ammonites, red algae, and sea lilies.
David Hockney's "Park Hotel Munich, 1972" captures a scene from a hotel room in Munich. Hockney has had a long-standing relationship with Louisiana, having exhibited there since his solo exhibition in 1976, followed by shows in 2001, 2011, and 2015. The light streaming through the window, the arrangement of chairs, and the serene interior reflect Hockney's consistent pursuit of "the quality of space and light in everyday life," making it a piece that can naturally adorn any living space.
The A2 size is a popular choice, offering a presence that is both striking and easily integrated into various settings. It can effortlessly transform the impression of spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways.
The Seaside Museum
The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is located in a small seaside town called Humlebæk in Denmark. Just a 35-minute train ride from central Copenhagen, the museum is set on a hill overlooking the Øresund Strait, where a 19th-century villa and a modern exhibition building are arranged amidst a sculpture park, forest, and the sea.
The name "Louisiana" comes from Alexander Brun, the landowner who built the villa in 1855. His three wives were all named "Louise," which inspired the name of the villa. The current Louisiana was established as a museum in 1958 when businessman Knud W. Jensen acquired the villa. Jensen's vision was clear: art should not be something lofty, but something that speaks directly to the viewer. This belief has been reflected in all aspects of the museum's operation since its opening, from the design of the exhibition spaces to the placement of benches for visitors and even the café menu, with Jensen personally involved in the process. Over the past 60 years, the museum has continued to host world-class exhibitions, becoming the largest modern art museum in Scandinavia with over 700,000 visitors annually, while its spirit remains unchanged. The commitment to not making art "something for special people" is consistently reflected in Louisiana's posters.
