Astonishing weaving technique

The beautiful bamboo basket is handmade in Kumamoto Prefecture, where bamboo forest flourishes. Bamboo craft has been popular from ages ago in this area. Although the number of artisans who could hand-weave bamboo is getting smaller in Japan, the region attempts to develop human resources to preserve the traditional technique.

Bamboo is widely grown in Asian countries, including Japan and China. It has been used for daily tools, decoration, architectural material, agriculture, and the fishing industry. This basket uses a typical kind of bamboo called Madake for its material. Madake is the widest kind of bamboo and has high durability.

Madake is split and becomes like a braid for weaving. Each bamboo braid is polished by hands to have a beautiful gloss on them. Intricate weaving is also a feature of bamboo baskets made in Kumamoto.

The basket is made for shopping. The bottom of the basket is made so durable to carry heavy stuff. Not only for shopping, but it could also be used for storage as well.
