The comfort of sheepskin,in everyday life

OWEN BARRY is a family-run sheepskin workshop founded in 1948 in Somerset, in the southwest of England. The techniques and knowledge cultivated and accumulated over five generations place great importance on traditional English craftsmanship, making it a brand that upholds "Made in England."

The family had been involved in leather tanning even before founding the brand, but they were struck with shock upon learning that the leather they had produced had, during wartime, been used—out of necessity—as a material for weapons. This experience led them to establish a brand where they themselves could oversee what items their carefully processed leather became, ensuring it would be cherished in people's everyday lives—a philosophy that continues to this day.

The sheepskin crafted by OWEN BARRY has a fine texture and softness, and because air remains trapped between the fibers, it offers excellent heat retention. The sheepskin they use is carefully sourced from a trusted tannery they have worked with for many years. In addition to checking the quality of the leather, they regularly visit the tannery to confirm that the tanning, dyeing, and disposal methods do not place undue burden on the environment.

Aiming for sustainable craftsmanship rooted in ethical conviction

Rather than simply being craftspeople with technical skill, they place great importance on fully embracing the background behind their craftsmanship. OWEN BARRY's sheepskin is made entirely from the wool of sheep raised for food. In Europe, where awareness of environmental and animal welfare issues is especially high, materials derived from food production tend to receive more positive views than so-called "eco-fur." Unlike common furs such as mink or fox, sheepskin is recognized as a material with a considerably lower environmental impact, in the sense that it makes use of a part that would otherwise be discarded.

Hides processed for food purposes are not typically beautiful in appearance, but by working with a tannery whose skills have been honed over many years, it becomes possible to tan them beautifully without the use of chemicals.

They also hold the conviction that, because they are cherishing the leather from lives given for food—carefully tanning, dyeing, and shaping it—they want to use this gift from nature without waste. Please understand that natural materials can show individual variation, and that slight marks may sometimes appear on the back or elsewhere; items that pose no issue in use are delivered as quality goods.

Also, because dye lots can vary slightly, the same color name may look somewhat different in shade compared to last year's version.

There are four types of rugs, which fall into two categories based on differences in pile length.

MUSHROOM・IVORY → LUXE Series

The LUXE series features a soft, long pile with a natural, beautiful sheen. It offers a look of warmth that makes you want to reach out and touch it—a texture that truly captures the character of sheepskin. Much of it originates from cold regions, including England, giving it a moderate springiness and thickness.

DARK GREY・NATURAL → UK CURLY Series

The UK CURLY series features shorter-cut wool that's been curled into a fluffy, bouncy texture. It's casual in feel and easy to match with any interior style. Compared to LUXE, it's easier to care for and has an adorable, plush-toy-like charm.

For those who'd prefer something a bit more casual than a rug, the seat pad is a great choice. This year, a square shape has joined the lineup as well.

Seat pads are basically meant to be placed on dining chairs, benches, or stools, but of course you can also use them as a cushion when sitting on the floor. The smooth leather backing surprisingly keeps them from slipping.
