Nordic textiles you can place anywhere in the house. BRITA SWEDEN blankets that are light despite being wool, and warm despite being cotton.

One of the great pleasures of autumn and winter is adding wool or cotton blankets to your sofa or bedroom, refreshing the mood for a fresh start. Just as you change your clothes with the seasons, bringing new textiles into your room can make the time you spend at home feel even richer.

Whether you're a beginner or already own several, a versatile wool or cotton blanket is one worth having on hand

What we'd like to recommend at ZUTTO this time are blankets that are "light despite being wool" and "warm despite being cotton." At this time of year, we start reaching for stoles and blankets to ward off the cold, but unlike stoles, blankets are larger, so those knitted from thick yarn tend to be heavy. Many people want to use their favorite pattern to casually change the mood of their interior in the living room, bedroom, and other spaces—but if the blanket is heavy and difficult to handle or put away, that's a bit of a shame.

A thick, heavy blanket is of course warmer for it, but with heating equipment as advanced as it is today, a blanket that's easy to pick up and use—while still keeping the "warmth" and "the wintery atmosphere a blanket creates"—may well be better suited to the times we live in now.

Using blankets as part of autumn and winter home decoration has become a standard practice, and many households may in fact already have plenty. (I'm actually one of those people myself...) But when I once visited the home of a Finnish friend, I saw a pile of blankets stacked on the living room chairs—more than enough for every family member—and asked, "Don't you have too many blankets?" She replied, "They're all different in design, size, and thickness, so I have ones that are just right for the sofa, ones focused on warmth for the balcony, and sometimes I swap them out with the ones in the bedroom just for fun." This episode made me realize that in the harsh winters of the Nordic countries, there's real joy in being able to grab the right blanket the moment you need it, in choosing among different blankets, and in the happiness of finding a favorite.

This time, as blankets you can pick up with ease, we're introducing 12 designs from BRITA SWEDEN, a brand known for designs that capture the rich nature of the Nordic region. RAIN, which was popular last year, makes a return, and it's joined by two new designs, TRADITION and POPPY.

First, what is BRITA SWEDEN?

BRITA SWEDEN was founded in 2010 by a mother, Margareta, and her two daughters, Pia and Monica. The brand name BRITA comes from the name of Margareta's grandmother, who was a craftswoman. The BRITA SWEDEN kitchen mat that ZUTTO originally introduced is a rug made from plastic, a traditional product that has been made in Sweden since around the 1940s. It's something every Swede is familiar with, and skilled artisans still make each one by hand using looms from that era.

The brand was founded out of Margareta's pride in her family, generations of craftspeople, after learning weaving and knitting from her grandmother and mother. The brand started out making bedding, aprons, and tablecloths from organic materials, and after the plastic rug she made in 2009 became popular, BRITA SWEDEN was officially established in 2010. Today, the brand offers rugs made not only from natural materials like wool and cotton, but also from eco-friendly materials such as recycled PET bottles, across a wide range of fabrics.

Above all, what makes the brand so appealing is its gentle, stylish textiles that give you that comforting Nordic feeling. Every design is one that makes you happy just having it in your room.

This year's 12 blanket designs

Right: Merino mix blanket RAINING

BRITA SWEDEN blankets are inspired by the rich nature of the Nordic region, and by scenery and memories from childhood, with designs that incorporate natural colors and shapes. Each one is a joy to have, with its gentle touch and cozy, fluffy warmth.

The wool blankets are thin yet tightly woven, and being wrapped in one gives a happy, contented feeling. Because the wool yarn is fine, it doesn't feel too scratchy against the skin—an important point that lets you use it comfortably for a long time.

The image above shows a cotton blanket. Both the wool and cotton blankets share a common feature: a subtle fringe along the edges.

All the sizes available this time are 130cm×170cm. Here's how it looks held by a woman, for scale. It's a size that gives you a sense of security when you're wrapped up against the cold, yet it's not as large as a throw, so it can be used in a wide variety of places and ways.

Another nice point is that both the wool-based blankets and the cotton-based blankets can be washed in a washing machine. Since you do need to watch out for snagging, please use a laundry net when washing them. Blankets often end up being used on the sofa, and I used to be cautious about the possibility of spilling a drink on one—but with this blanket, that's no problem. Tumble drying isn't allowed, but since it's thin, it dries easily even during the winter months, which is a nice plus.

【NEW!】Recycled Cotton Blanket TRADITION

From left: YELLOW, GREEN, ORANGE

TRADITION is a cotton blanket made by loosely knitting together thick strands of yarn. It's thanks to this thick yarn that the blanket stays warm even though it's made of cotton. Each color has a touch of fluorescent hue mixed in, giving the tartan check a lively, cheerful look that's utterly charming.

Since it's made of cotton, there's absolutely no need to worry about it feeling scratchy. It's soft and drapes gently, making it easy to use in a way that feels like it's wrapping around your body.

This cotton blanket is perfect for wrapping yourself in on a groggy morning, coffee in hand. For that brief moment before you're fully awake, it feels warm and cozy—no scratchiness at all, even through thin pajama fabric—making it a special way to feel the start of the day.

【NEW!】Merino Mix Blanket POPPY

From top: PINK, GREEN, BLUE

POPPY features an innocent-looking check pattern with a lot of charm. The three colors used create a sense of playful delight that brings poppy flowers to mind—a pattern that seems to bathe a room in soft spring sunlight, lighting it up warmly.

One thing I'd love to try is using it like a bedspread. Draping this checked blanket over a fluffy down comforter completely transforms the mood of a bedroom. A bedroom is usually just a place to sleep, but if it can become such a lovely space, you might find yourself wanting to knit or read in bed before turning in for the night.

【Popular】Merino Mix Blanket RAINING

メリノミックスブランケット RAINING(SUN)

This one was the number-one best seller last year. RAINING is a textile depicting the gentle patter of falling rain. Even rain, which can feel like such a nuisance when it falls, is expressed here as such lovely droplets of water—truly a hallmark of Scandinavian design.

メリノミックスブランケット RAINING(SUN)

Since the coloring is quite subdued, rather than making a statement as the centerpiece of a room's decor, it works well simply draped over the arm of a sofa, blending naturally into the space.

On a rainy or snowy day, it's lovely to deliberately choose this blanket to match the scene outside, even indoors, and let your thoughts drift toward a distant Scandinavian winter. That cold winter rain somehow feels warm—that's the magic held within the textile.

The colors are reversed on the front and back, so you can enjoy it as a reversible blanket.
