We asked MARVELETS, a brand known for its canvas bags as a signature item, to produce this special order. Based on one of their popular shapes, they made three sizes with the special specification of leather-wrapped handles just for this order.

They created these in two colors: a refreshing INDIGO and a sleek BLACK. Both colors pair beautifully with the brown of the cow-hide nume leather (vegetable-tanned leather), and among them, INDIGO is a special color exclusive to ZUTTO, not offered in MARVELETS's regular lineup.

MARVELETS is a Japanese brand that continues its careful craftsmanship through domestic production by skilled artisans. It began in 2006, when founder Shuji Mitsuda, who had been working as a fashion designer in Paris, France, was struck by the allure of leather and the fascination of its processing—this experience became the catalyst for the brand's creation. Rather than mass production, each product is completed through a process in which materials and treatments are carefully selected at every stage.

For instance, when making what are called prototypes, the designer handles every step—patternmaking, sewing, dyeing, and finishing—by hand, based on an image held in mind. By creating with his own hands, he can sense the material's expression and texture, carefully bringing that image to life.

The leather they use is vegetable-tanned leather created through direct discussions with the tannery that tans the hides. According to the designer, tanning is the single most important factor in determining the quality of leather. By combining this with natural materials such as hemp and wool, and applying a finishing process based on an original recipe, MARVELETS creates its own distinctively rich texture.

Even when brand new, MARVELETS products carry a weighty, almost vintage atmosphere—something not found in mass-produced goods, and part of why they inspire owners to use them carefully for years to come. A special order made to be cherished even longer

This special order actually began as an idea from a staff member who loves canvas bags.

Staff member: "I own several canvas bags, and what I love is being able to enjoy the process of change—the material softening, the color gradually fading, wrinkles forming. The one thing that bothered me, though, was that the handles, which get the most wear, would become dirty, and the color would fade dramatically from friction. Hoping to solve that, I asked for a special order with leather handles."

A canvas bag made by skilled artisans is already durable and rewarding to watch age over time on its own. With this ZUTTO special order, we've added even more durability and enjoyment, so it can be used for even longer.

Handles made with cow-hide nume leather

Normally, the handles are made of the same canvas as the body of the bag, but for this special order, we had them wrapped in a sleek dark brown cow-hide nume leather. Nume leather refers to vegetable-tanned leather. The cow-hide nume leather is first sewn into a tube shape by machine, then threaded onto the handle by hand—an extra step that adds to the process. This extra step increases durability and also helps prevent staining.

We're told this leather was made as a brand-original by the tannery, and when we asked the designer about its characteristics, he answered us with great care.

"This leather, made as a special order original by the tannery, is vegetable-tanned cowhide generously infused with oil. As you use it, the leather develops the clear, translucent sheen characteristic of nume leather, along with a sense of texture from the oil—it makes for wonderful aging. And of course, being nume leather, the color deepens over time as well."

We selected a bright brown leather. It's a color where changes are easy to notice.

This part lets you directly feel MARVELETS's concept of "things that deepen with time." Since it's the area your hands touch most often, you can enjoy the changes in texture as well, and it's a pleasing feature functionally too.

Richly textured fabric, with carefully chosen parts for every detail

The handles and shoulder strap are reinforced with hand-hammered copper punched rivets, the kind used on vintage denim. We were told these parts were chosen with great care, and this too reflects the brand's distinctive character.

"Japanese-made rivets are limited to the small ones used on jeans, and among those, punched rivets are only a small portion. The rivets we use at MARVELETS are a fairly large punched type, and this size simply doesn't exist as a Japanese-made product. But since we absolutely wanted to use rivets of this size, we import all of them from America."

The other metal fittings, such as the eyelets and clasps, are made of brass, which develops a beautiful patina over time. The surface is also treated with a water-repellent paraffin finish, giving the bag the air of a vintage military piece that has been used for years. This distinctive atmosphere is something you rarely find in canvas bags from other brands.

Cowhide leather is also used on the zipper pull. It's a part that deepens in character the more you use it.

The core of the bag's opening also contains 4mm-thick cowhide nume leather. The reason natural materials are chosen even in places you can't see is to enhance both function and the bag's character. Using nume leather instead of wire or plastic keeps the opening from sagging and holds the bag's shape, while also giving it the natural stiffness and sense of familiarity that only a natural material can provide.

Every bag has a hook to close the opening, so even when you have items in the space on either side, there's no need to worry about the bag gaping open. Since canvas bags often have a simple construction, this kind of thoughtful detail is a welcome touch.
