Indoors or outdoors during the day, a thin long-sleeve shirt or a T-shirt with longer sleeves is just about right, but for the morning and evening commute, that alone can feel a little unreliable. Every year, during this transition from summer to autumn, it's a time when we find ourselves wondering what on earth we wore last year, puzzling over what to put on.
This is exactly the season when a light outer layer comes in handy, given the big swings in temperature between morning and evening. This time, we've added a short-length jacket to our lineup, one that will see you through from the first chill of the season all the way to winter. Aiming for an outer layer you'll want to reach for every day, one that's easy to wear, we've paid close attention to every detail and to the silhouette.
Having worn all kinds of outerwear over the years—duffle coats, down jackets, and more—we've come to realize that being light and soft is a truly essential quality in an outer layer.
Have you ever noticed how heavy pieces, or ones made of stiff fabric that restricts movement when layered, quietly end up getting worn less and less? For this jacket, along with the fabric's fluffy, soft touch, we've left out the lining and sized it with the assumption that you'll be layering a knit underneath—resulting in a piece that's easy to move in and light to wear.
The collarless design also plays a part in keeping things light. While the charm of a hooded outer layer is hard to give up, a collarless jacket won't bulk up when paired with a stole or muffler. It also opens up more options for autumn and winter styling—whether you're pairing it with a bright turtleneck underneath, or having fun with a detachable collar.
The material we chose is a 100% cotton fabric called cotton blanket flannel. "Flannel" refers to the brushed fabric also used in autumn and winter check-pattern flannel shirts. Short for "flannel cloth," it's known for being warm and soft to the touch—comfortable enough to be used for pajamas and baby clothing.
As the "blanket" in its name suggests, the fabric we chose this time has a solid density and thickness, giving it a wonderfully fluffy feel. Once you put it on, it's light and warm—truly an outstanding fabric for autumn and winter. Thanks to that density and thickness, it's also this material's distinctive three-dimensional look when worn as an outer layer.
It's a basic design that works with any outfit, but once you actually put it on, you'll notice careful attention to the silhouette in every detail.
The secret lies in the seams at the back panel and the sleeves. Seen from behind, they connect into a single continuous line. This gives the back of the jacket a three-dimensional look, allowing it to be worn with a stylish, menswear-inspired silhouette.
Another key point is the shape of the sleeves. They're sewn to taper slightly toward the fingertips, so they don't come across as loose, yet still leave enough room to wear a knit underneath—we aimed for that perfectly balanced line.
With the wish that you'll wear it with ease every day, we chose large snap buttons. Being able to put it on and take it off with a satisfying snap, using just one hand, makes it a handy piece for adjusting your body temperature on trains or indoors.
The oversized, workwear-like pockets are understated yet make a memorable impression.
We've prepared two colors: BEIGE and NAVY. These are soft shades that work not only during the period before you bring out your thick wool coat or down jacket in winter, but also in spring. The brushed texture of the cotton flannel gives off a moleskin-like distinctive sheen, adding a touch of refinement.
