The soft dyed fabric of "azumadaki" sways with every movement.

A lightness and softness reminiscent of a gentle breeze. This texture is born from a dyeing technique called "azumadaki," a method of fabric dyeing that dates back to the Edo period.

The dyed fabric known as azumadaki is a one-of-a-kind textile created through the collaboration of a fabric wholesaler in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, and a dye workshop in Sumida Ward.

Let's go back in time to the Edo period. In those days, fabric and dye (from plants and other natural materials) were placed together in an iron pot, like those used for goemonburo baths, and boiled to achieve the dye color. This process, called "kamairi" (kiln firing), produced a soft fabric texture and atmospheric color unevenness—qualities that mass production simply cannot replicate. To recreate the conditions of that era, azumadaki uses a dyeing vat shaped like a drum, much smaller than the kilns typically used in standard dyeing processes.

Inside the small vat, the pieces of fabric rub against each other repeatedly, gradually becoming softer than they were before dyeing.

Even now, long after this method was first developed, the challenges of producing azumadaki fabric remain much the same: only a small amount can be dyed at a time, and the results are affected by temperature and humidity.

Because everything depends on the skill of the craftsperson adjusting the conditions of the vat, the process requires an enormous amount of manpower and effort. But the softness and comfort of the dyed fabric, along with its natural texture and coloring, are qualities you simply won't find in mass-produced clothing. Even the subtle variations in color are part of the charm that comes only from handwork—an expression unique to fabric that has been created with time and care.

The Azumadaki Cotton Lawn Shirt Dress uses a thin fabric, so even in its long length it feels light. Yet it isn't overly sheer, making it comfortable to wear on its own as well. (When wearing it alone, please wear a petticoat underneath.)

Thanks to its lightness, you can enjoy various styles with this dress—wearing it alone, layering it, or using it as an outer piece.

Within this simple shirt dress design are a few thoughtful details.

First, a hanger loop has been added at the back yoke, with gathers below it. This adds a touch of softness to what could otherwise read as a masculine shirt design, ensuring the back view looks beautiful as well.

And the collar is a slightly relaxed band collar, designed to sit neatly even when paired with high-neck inner layers like turtlenecks.

The seam pockets, added discreetly so as not to disrupt the overall design, are large enough to hold a smartphone or keys.
