Amid today's fashion landscape, where countless trends coexist simultaneously, chino pants remain, alongside denim, one of those timeless bottoms unaffected by age, gender, era, or genre. "Chino" originally referred to chino cloth, a thick cotton fabric, but nowadays the term is used more broadly to describe chino pants in general. Not only is the material itself durable, but the range of colors and shapes available makes chinos versatile enough to wear all year round—an item you'll always want in your wardrobe. What we'd like to introduce at ZUTTO is our original chino trousers, designed to be worn in over time until they become truly your own. Even vintage enthusiasts will be won over. Let's take a closer look at their appeal.
Chino pants, a wardrobe staple, are said to get their name from a historical episode: during a past world war, the U.S. military purchased large quantities of fabric from China for use in military uniforms, and the term "chino" is believed to derive from the word "China." In earlier times, dyes were extremely expensive, so military uniforms were typically left undyed and white. However, in the latter half of the 19th century, the British military began dyeing uniforms with coffee or earth—both to make dirt less noticeable and to achieve a camouflage effect in battle—giving rise to the term "British Khaki."
During wartime, there was a need to produce large quantities of uniforms quickly and cheaply, and as a result, lower-quality fabrics quickly became widespread. In contrast, senior officers were given "trousers" made from a higher-grade material called "West Point" (also known as "weapon" cloth). After the war, chinos—durable and comfortable to wear—spread through men's fashion into mainstream culture, becoming a beloved staple for people of all ages and genders.
*While chino cloth, the material used for chino pants, is typically a single-yarn twill woven from one thread, "West Point" (or "weapon") chino is woven with two twisted threads, giving it two to three times the strength of single-yarn fabric. It's said to have originated from the uniforms of the elite military academy at West Point, New York. Weapon cloth has a rich sheen and is soft and supple, yet firm enough to resist wrinkling.
For this project, ZUTTO fully embraced the functional qualities of these originally military-inspired chino trousers, while also focusing carefully on creating a beautiful silhouette that's easy for women to wear.
The silhouette is tapered toward the hem—easy for women to wear, yet not overly masculine. Pay special attention to the area below the knee: the seam along the side of the calf is twisted slightly toward the front, following an ergonomic pattern that's been three-dimensionally cut to match the natural movement of the knee.
△A three-dimensionally cut pattern with the seam twisted toward the front as it runs down to the hem. This also creates a slimming effect, making the legs appear slender and straight.
The buttons are a revival of those used on vintage chinos, made from urea resin, a material prized for its excellent heat resistance and lightfastness. The trousers also feature a small coin pocket in front, along with a zipper pull in the YKK UNIVERSAL vintage style—sure to satisfy even the most discerning enthusiasts. These are trousers packed with the kind of carefully considered parts typically found in menswear.

The fabric is an original creation developed jointly by a textile mill in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture—known for its durable workwear fabrics and a supplier to renowned overseas brands—and FOB FACTORY. While most chino fabrics available today tend to be flat and, at times, overly refined, ZUTTO's chino trousers feature a rugged, textured fabric with a three-dimensional quality that combines a rustic feel with warmth. The team held repeated discussions with fabric specialists, carefully analyzing the material. The raw cotton used is Cameroon cotton, known for its extra-long fibers, and the looms were adjusted to recreate the slightly rough "twill distortion" seen on the fabric surface in the original vintage material. The dyeing uses vat dye, a method rarely used today, and the resulting "West Point" fabric is the product of repeated trial and error.
The VATDYE (vat dyeing) process applied to this fabric is another major characteristic of this chino. VATDYE is highly resistant to detergents and won't fade in the wash, but it has relatively low resistance to friction—meaning that wear marks (the kind of fading commonly seen on denim) tend to appear with use, allowing the fabric to develop its own vintage character the more you wear it. Achieving deep, dark colors with this dyeing method is notoriously difficult, challenging even for skilled artisans, which is why it's rarely used for clothing today. Rather than simply fading from friction, this fabric lets you truly appreciate the quality of the material the more you wear it—making these chino trousers, much like denim, something you "raise" over time. We hope you'll enjoy watching the character of the fabric evolve as you continue to wear them.

These bottoms have a straight, clean silhouette that makes your legs look slim, but that can also make choosing a size feel tricky. To help with that, we've put together this sizing guide. Three of our staff members tried the pants on beforehand, so please use their notes on both fit and styling as a reference.
【Size】
I'd choose Size 1. When I wore them high-waisted, the waist felt a bit loose, so I'd want to cinch it in with a belt. Worn lower on the hips, they fit perfectly without a belt, though the length is a little long, so I rolled up the hems. The hip and thigh areas are roomy and comfortable.
【What do you look for in everyday clothing?】
I look for pieces that are comfortably relaxed but still well-balanced. The feel of the fabric against my skin matters a lot too, and I'm not fond of designs that feel like they'll only be wearable for a single season.
【How did these chinos feel to wear?】
Chinos always struck me as a bit workwear-ish, so I'd never owned a pair before, but the seam below the knee and the silhouette that gradually tapers give these a feminine touch, and they felt really easy to wear. The fabric feels sturdy enough to reassure you it'll last, yet it's not stiff or bulky while wearing—just the right balance.
【Styling suggestion】
Since I'm not especially tall, I'd roll up the hems once and pair them with sabot sandals that add some height. A compact top with a belt that has a bit of design flair would also work nicely.
△Sabots by dansko, which our staff loves too. The rounded toe and thick heel make them exceptionally comfortable to walk in, while giving your look a little extra height.
【Size】
Size 1 fit me perfectly. You can wear them either high-waisted or lower on the hips, but since I prefer a high waist, I'd choose Size 1, which fits just right at the waist that way. If you want a looser fit, Size 2 would work well too.
△From left: the impression of Size 1 and Size 2 worn high-waisted. Size 1 gives a neat, polished look, while Size 2 offers just the right amount of ease.
【What do you look for in everyday clothing?】
Comfort is important to me, but so is a clean, flattering silhouette.
【How did these chinos feel to wear?】
I was surprised at how clean the silhouette looked once I put them on. Even worn high-waisted, they're roomy through the hips and thighs, so they don't cling to the body's lines, and I love how the slim cut below the knee makes the ankles look neatly defined. The fabric doesn't stretch, so it doesn't have the fit of skinny pants, but I really appreciated the small details—like the seaming—that are designed to keep the silhouette looking clean all the way down.
【Styling suggestion】
Since I'd want to make the most of the chino silhouette by wearing them high-waisted, I'd tuck in my top. These chinos have such lovely details, so I'd pair them with a simple T-shirt or cut-and-sew top. Something clean and simple, like the plain short-sleeve top from CHANTECLAIR, would pair really well.
△A cool, breathable cut-and-sew top recommended for anyone who prefers not to show their shoulders. Made from thick cotton fabric with excellent breathability.
【Size】
Size 2 was loose and fit me just right. The hip area is roomy enough that Size 1 would also work fine, but since the fit is slim below the knee, I'd recommend Size 2, or even Size 3 if you want to wear them lower on the hips for a more casual look.
【What do you look for in everyday clothing?】
I look for pieces that show off the body's lines beautifully and that are easy to mix and match.
【How did these chinos feel to wear?】
I normally have a complex about the shape of my legs, so I avoid stretchy skinny-type bottoms, but it's amazing how these chino trousers make my legs look slimmer while still keeping a beautiful shape. Precisely because the fabric itself has no stretch, the straight silhouette below the knee holds its shape firmly—these really are bottoms that seemed like they should exist but somehow didn't until now. I usually wear wide pants to hide the shape of my legs, but wearing something that naturally looks this slim made me want to own a pair myself.
【Styling suggestion】
Since the chino fabric has a masculine, casual feel, I think it would look lovely paired with feminine ballet flats, pumps, or sandals that show off the top of the foot. It would also suit a soft, flowy blouse or a slim cut-and-sew top just as well. The balance between the roomy hips and the neatly defined ankles is so perfect, I imagine these could really be worn year-round!

Since they're billed as ”trousers to grow with you,” you might worry that caring for them is complicated—but there's no need to. The color doesn't fade easily in the wash, and wrinkles don't form easily either, so there are really only these three points to keep in mind.
・When using a washing machine, choose a gentle wash setting.
・Do not put them in the dryer.
・Hang on bottoms hangers to avoid fold creases. (If fold creases bother you, iron with a pressing cloth.)
Precisely because the fabric is rustic and warm, even that washed, worn-in texture looks cool. Of course it pairs well with sweaters and sweatshirts, but also with blouses and T-shirts. Part of the appeal of these trousers is how much fun it is to coordinate them with all kinds of clothes already in your closet.
