What does it mean for a T-shirt to be casual, yet elegant? An original garment whose charm lies in soft, feminine grace

Casualness and femininity—at first glance these seem like contradictory qualities, but casual items with careful attention to the accessories paired with them, the texture of the fabric, and the silhouette can actually bring out the wearer's femininity. Staple items like simple T-shirts or washed jeans can be worn by men too, so the overall impression changes dramatically depending on what shape and texture you choose.

You love casual wear, but you also want to enjoy an elegant, feminine style. Fulfilling this slightly greedy wish, the "Heavyweight T-shirt Series" has joined our lineup of original garments. Let us introduce the points scattered throughout each design—the T-shirt and the dress.

What is a Heavyweight T-shirt?

As the name "heavyweight" suggests, T-shirts originally made from heavier-weight fabric came to be called "heavyweight T-shirts." When they first appeared, thick, substantial fabric was considered a mark of quality, but nowadays, with advances in technology, that's not necessarily the case.

Because of their thickness, heavyweight T-shirts don't cling to the body's lines, and since they don't show what's underneath, they're easy to wear in everyday life. Originally an item found mostly in menswear, their appeal lies in being able to wear them without worry, giving them a good, rugged feel. While simple styling like menswear items has its own charm, the honest truth is that we also wanted to choose something with a more feminine silhouette. It was from this desire that we came to create this "casual, yet elegant" heavyweight series.

The Secret to "Casual, Yet Elegant"

Beautiful Silhouette Even When Worn Alone

When you touch ZUTTO's heavyweight T-shirt, you'll notice that despite the thick fabric, it doesn't have any stiff, coarse texture. Unlike the texture you might imagine when you hear "heavyweight T-shirt," what stands out is its suppleness.

Many of you have probably thought that while a T-shirt worn alone is easy to choose, it can end up looking like the same old style every time. To solve this concern, we've incorporated ingenuity throughout the design so that simply wearing it achieves a beautiful silhouette.

Take the neckline of the T-shirt, for example. Since typical heavyweight T-shirts are often menswear items, they tend to have a snug neckline or a plain shape, giving a somewhat rugged impression. Of course, that kind of casual wear has its own charm, but this time, to let you enjoy a more feminine casual style, we deliberately designed the neckline with a bit of extra ease.

Also, the slits on either side are a design point added so the shirt looks good even when worn casually and simply. The slits bring movement to the overall design, and by deliberately making the front and back panels different lengths, they give a single T-shirt more expression.

A Design You'll Want to Wear Effortlessly, All on Its Own

The color of the stitching around the slits matches the color of the tape at the neckline. We offer a fresh, spring-and-summer-appropriate [WHITE], a calm, sophisticated [CHARCOAL GREY] for grown-up styling, and a handsome-looking [DARK OLIVE].

These accents throughout the design allow for a feminine silhouette even when worn alone. Since the shape is simple, it's also lovely to add an accent with a statement necklace or a scarf.

A Silhouette That Makes the Most of the Fabric's Drape

Meanwhile, the ZUTTO original T-shirt dress makes the most of both the casualness of a heavyweight T-shirt and the elegance of a dress. Thanks to the fabric's drape, the overall shape doesn't spread out too much, giving a neat, streamlined impression. When worn, the weight of the fabric causes the hem to narrow, creating a silhouette reminiscent of a cocoon dress.

The drape of the supple fabric creates a casual style with a hint of elegance. Mindful of the vertical line created by the dress, we've allowed more ease in the vertical direction than with the T-shirt. The colors are [CHARCOAL GREY] and [DARK OLIVE] — both calm, chic, grown-up colors.

Since the dress has a simple shape, we also recommend adding an accent with your favorite accessories or small items. It's fun to think about which items to pair it with, isn't it?

A supple fabric that achieves "refined casual"

From Wakayama, renowned as a center of knit production

Kinan Meriyasu is a long-established company founded in 1930. This venerable factory handles everything from fabric planning and knitting to production and final product-making, and has also produced garments for numerous major overseas fashion houses. When ZUTTO created its first original apparel, it was Kinan Meriyasu that took on the manufacturing.

Wakayama boasts the top production volume in Japan for circular-knit fabric, making it a comprehensive hub for knit manufacturing. The history of Wakayama's knitting industry is said to have begun in 1909, when Kusumoto Tōnan introduced five Swiss-made circular knitting machines in Ono-cho, Wakayama City, and began production there. When people hear the word "knit," many probably picture cardigans or sweaters, but "knit" is actually a general term for knitted fabric. It's used widely, from jerseys, T-shirts, and underwear to socks, scarves, and even bags—and the T-shirt featured here is no exception.

In pursuit of "suppleness"

The yarn used is a high-quality combed cotton yarn ("comb yarn," 20-count). "Count" is a unit expressing the thickness of the yarn—the smaller the number, the thicker the yarn. This 20-count is the thickness often used for towels, making it a somewhat thick yarn. The characteristics of comb yarn include minimal fuzz and long fiber length, which gives it a lustrous sheen. In addition, the fabric uses a technique called "hikizoroe," in which several untwisted strands of yarn are knit together as a bundle, resulting in a fabric with pronounced stitches and a tight, firm finish.

A tight, supple fabric is the main appeal

Thicker yarns are often knit at a low gauge, but here, in order to create a fabric with higher density, the fabric is deliberately knit at a high gauge (20G). Since the machine can heat up during the knitting process, this places extra strain on the knitting machine and needles, which is why few factories choose this method. Because the knit structure is so firm, the fabric doesn't stretch much, but this also means it's less prone to losing its shape—one of its distinguishing features.

A dense fabric achieved only through painstaking effort

What should you keep in mind when washing?

The heavyweight T-shirt series was designed to be worn often, in a variety of settings, so of course it can be washed at home. Since it's 100% cotton, it will grow softer and more comfortable with every wear and every wash.

Keep the spin cycle short

Please select the "gentle" setting on your washing machine. Also, because the fabric is knit with a tight, dense structure, it tends to wrinkle easily, so we recommend using a shorter spin cycle. To prevent fading and damage to the fabric, please avoid using bleach or tumble drying.

As a rule, hang dry in the shade; switch to flat drying if you're concerned about the garment losing its shape

To prevent fading from direct sunlight, please hang dry in the shade.
Also, please note that if the fabric gets wet and rubs against something, color transfer may occur, so keep it away from light-colored clothing. Since the fabric has a substantial weight to it, those concerned about the garment losing its shape can extend its life and keep its silhouette looking neat longer by drying it flat.

Ironing out wrinkles

Wearing the T-shirt without ironing lets you enjoy the natural texture of the fabric itself, but if wrinkles bother you, feel free to iron it. Set your iron to a medium temperature (sole plate temperature 150°C or below) and use a pressing cloth.
