The season for wool stoles to shine has come around again this year. At ZUTTO, we introduce sturdy, thick stoles from many brands, and MANTECAS is one of them. With colors and woven patterns unlike anything else, it's a brand that gains popularity every year.
Manteigas is a small village in the mountains of the Serra da Estrela range in Portugal, South America—er, Europe. The stoles we're introducing this time have traveled all the way from there to reach Japan.

Manteigas is said to be the birthplace of the manta (cloak), and the stoles woven using traditional local methods have long protected shepherds throughout history as mantas. With vivid coloring and a tightly woven texture made from 100% natural wool, these stoles are simple, genuine pieces that seem to preserve the thrill of a chance encounter on a journey.

What led us to introduce the MANTECAS stole was a single comment from one of our staff members: "There are many popular wool stoles out there, but MANTECAS stoles are a little different—you can really feel the breath and spirit of the people living there. I want people to know more about MANTECAS, a brand you can grow attached to not just for its materials and design, but for the history and human heart rooted in that land!" It's the kind of stole that makes you want to speak up about it, and we really hope you'll pick one up and see for yourself.
In the village of Manteigas, 100% natural wool fabric (Burel Wool) has been made for over 400 years from sheep grazed on Portugal's highest mountains, which rise to nearly 2000 meters. Isabel and João, who had visited the area on vacation, fell in love with the beautiful natural surroundings of Manteigas and decided to settle there. They began creating wool products that combined the traditional Burel Wool techniques—whose successors had grown scarce—with modern technology. This is how the new brand MANTECAS came to be.

The wool used in MANTECAS is sheared by the second week of May each year, then woven throughout the summer. From spinning the yarn and dyeing it to finishing the tassels on the woven fabric, everything is made entirely by hand. This method of production has been passed down through generations since ancient times, and it's said that the village elders still maintain and use looms dating back to the 1600s.

The MANTECAS stoles are born from design patterns woven on the 1600s-era looms mentioned earlier. The Burel weave, with its high-quality wool tightly woven together, is extremely durable.
The texture isn't so much fluffy and moist-soft as it is refined and supple. Compared to cashmere or fluffy wool stoles and blankets, it might feel a bit rugged and craftsman-like, but there's a sense of reassurance that comes from knowing it will last a long time. As you use it, it won't go limp or flatten out—instead, the fabric that feels firm at first will gradually soften and mold to you in just the right way.

There's a reason the MANTECAS stole is especially recommended for grown-ups who have tried all kinds of stoles before.
Rather than the usual "basic" colors like gray or navy often seen in stoles, the MANTECAS lineup features vivid hues that seem to capture nature itself—yellow, green, and bordeaux among them. And yet they never feel too flashy, making them versatile enough to reach for every day.
When you think of a stole, you probably picture something fluffy and made of wool—but this MANTECAS stole is a little different. In fact, you might be surprised the moment you touch it.
As mentioned earlier, the tightly woven fabric is a defining feature of these stoles. In particular, the Stole VINTAGE series is the thickest among the MANTECAS stoles we carry at ZUTTO. Its precise, meticulous weaving technique resembles that of a fine carpet, and yet it remains supple. While the durability of wool stoles can vary widely, it's easy to imagine that a weave this dense and precise won't wear out easily.
Because it's so durable, this stole has a reassuring toughness that won't let you down no matter how hard you use it all day. Drape it loosely over your shoulders when you wake up, still chilled from sleep, and enjoy a cup of coffee. Take your winter mornings slowly.
Once you've had some time to relax, it's time to start on the household chores. Even just running out to put out the trash, draping it over your shoulders keeps you warm.

Having one at your workplace comes in handy too. You can use it as a blanket over your lap, and since the pile isn't long, it's easy to clean even if you spill food or crumbs on it.
For moms working hard at childcare, it's also good for naptime for children who dislike scratchy fabrics, and by making use of the stole's long, narrow shape, it works well as a car blanket for the back seat too.
And in the evening, of course, draping it over your shoulders on top of your pajamas makes for relaxing time. It has just the right amount of weight, perfect for cozy time on the sofa.

Introducing the MANTECAS stoles this time is Staff Member M. "The first time I saw MANTECAS, I fell in love at first sight with its craft-like beauty. Whenever someone tells me it's a lovely stole, I answer with a bit of confidence, 'It's woven in a small village in Portugal' (laughs)." So this time, let's take a closer look at the stoles together with this staff member.
The COFFEE BEAN series. It's a charming design made up of tiny coffee beans, but the pattern is subtle enough that you have to look closely to notice it, making it easy to wear for everyday use. This is the only stole made from a fabric of 80% wool and 20% polyester, giving it a lighter, softer texture compared to the other stoles.
Point: Even though the design is based on coffee beans, it manages not to look too juvenile—which is impressive. The colors form a striking bicolor combination, and the impression changes depending on how you wrap it. It wraps up soft and fluffy, so you can even wind it around on top of a coat.

The TIMELESS series has a retro, slightly nostalgic feel. True to its name, it carries a beauty meant to be loved across generations, regardless of age. 100% wool.
Point: Compared to COFFEE BEAN, this one has a bit more firmness to it, and that's exactly where MANTECAS's charm shines through. It's thin, yet has just the right amount of weight, with a supple feel that's easy to use.

The VINTAGE series features a rare fabric with a retro geometric pattern. It's a colorful stole with an unusual three-dimensional pattern. We recommend draping it over your shoulders or using it as a blanket.
Point: This is truly a high-quality stole overflowing with vintage character. At about 900g, it's generously made with wool, yet priced surprisingly well for that. When you first start using it, the weave feels tight and crisp, but the more you use it, the softer it becomes against your skin. Every color features blue thread as an accent, and it's lovely how the fringe is also done in blue thread.
We also carry blankets measuring approximately 180×130cm. It's a surprisingly practical size that won't lose its shape, so we highly recommend this one as well.

For example, if you drape it over your bed, you can expect enhanced warmth during the cold winter, and it will change the impression of your room to something more wintery. Beyond that, you can lay it down as a play area for children so their toys won't scratch the flooring, or drape it over the sofa to prevent stains while also refreshing the look of the room.
