Remarkably, every step of the process—from cutting the fabric, to sewing, painting, stamping, and assembly—is carried out by Kanayama himself. This naturally limits production numbers, but it also means each bag maintains a consistently high level of quality.

The difference between No. 4 and No. 9 fabric. No. 9 is thinner, with a finer, denser weave, while No. 4 has more thickness, giving a sturdier impression.

The foundation of SUNSET CRAFTSMAN CO.'s bags is Kurashiki canvas, a fabric traditionally made in Kurashiki City. Woven from cotton, it comes in two weights—No. 4 and No. 9—chosen according to the product. At ZUTTO, we mainly select items made with the lighter, thinner No. 9 fabric, which is especially easy for women to carry.

The leather used for the bags' handles and straps is vegetable-tanned cowhide crafted by a manufacturer in Himeji City. It has the sturdiness you'd expect from dense cowhide, along with a firm structure and a glossy finish. This commitment to Japanese materials, combined with well-balanced parts, is what gives these canvas bags a quality that truly deserves the word "refined."

"Painting" the bag

Apparently, some vintage bags made during the 20th century were painted over the fabric to serve as waterproofing. Once the paint dries, the bag is scrubbed with a brush to remove excess shine while helping the paint set into the fabric, a method that boosts both water resistance and durability.

As mentioned earlier, since Kanayama makes every product single-handedly, the painting process itself takes considerable time and effort. At the same time, it reveals a craftsmanship spirit that refuses to compromise, all in the name of making something that will be used for years to come.

The base of the bag, in particular, gains extra durability not only from the paint but also from the addition of copper rivets.
