With the new standards of recent times, it feels as though people's thinking about accessories has shifted. Because we wear masks now, earrings and piercings tend to be kept more understated. Rather than hiding the face behind a hat and mask for UV protection, a parasol offers a fresher way to stay shaded. With more trips taken by car or closer to home, bags have gotten smaller. And since people want to add a bit of color and style to their hands, nail art, watches, and bracelets have become popular choices. More and more people are rethinking their own personal standards of style in ways like these.
What ZUTTO would like to recommend is a style that incorporates the scarf. Worn around the neck, it shields you from the sun; wrapped around the hair, it keeps your hairstyle from being blown apart by strong winds; and wrapped around the wrist, it can be used just like a bracelet. The scarf is a convenient and stylish item.
MANTERO Silk Crepe Satin Scarf (70×70)
There are two reasons we wanted to introduce scarves this time. First, they may offer one proposal for those seeking a new kind of style suited to the current times. Second, for those who share ZUTTO's philosophy, a scarf is an item that lets you enjoy the clothes you already own for even longer.
Given the current state of society, wearing a mask means that earrings can easily catch and fall off, so many people are keeping them more understated. Since the mask covers most of the face, it tends to leave the strongest impression of all. Wearing a necklace, wrapping a stole around your neck, or putting on a hat are all options for adding style—so please consider adding a stole to that list of choices as well.
The second reason is that coordinating with a scarf allows you to keep wearing, for even longer, the clothes you've already loved and worn for years. A scarf can give a favorite piece of clothing a slightly different impression than usual, helping you enjoy that clothing for even longer.
What we all aspire to is the kind of effortless, everyday scarf or bandana style you see in magazine snapshots. That said, it can also feel a bit intimidating, carrying an image of being for only the most fashion-savvy. But a quality scarf made with silk thread isn't just for elegant, put-together looks—it can also add a subtle touch of allure to casual, everyday outfits. Let's start by looking at size and material.
How to Choose a Scarf Size
Here, ZUTTO has roughly divided square scarves into three categories based on how they're used.
【The Classic Large Size: 90cm】
The most standard and widely available size is the large scarf, around 90cm. Whether wrapped around the neck, draped over the shoulders, or used like a belt, it can take center stage in an outfit in countless ways. Because of its larger size, choosing a pattern is also part of the fun. This is the size we recommend most for those who want to start actively incorporating scarves into their outfits.

【The Versatile Medium Size: 60cm to 70cm】
The medium size, around 60 to 70cm, is a truly versatile choice—whether wrapped simply around the neck, used as an accent for a bag, or tied around the head like a hair accessory. It's a size that lets you fully enjoy the practicality of a scarf.

【A Small Size Recommended for Casual Wearers and Experts Alike: Around 50cm】
"I'd love to wear a scarf, but since my everyday style is pretty casual, an elegant scarf feels a little embarrassing."
"I already have several large stoles, so I'd like to collect some smaller-sized ones."
For people like this, we recommend a small stole around 50cm. It's just long enough to wrap around the neck, but since it doesn't add too much volume, it's easy for beginners to try, while also feeling fresh to those who already love wearing scarves.

About Stole Materials
When you think of a scarf, silk is probably the first material that comes to mind for many people. In fact, more than half of the scarves we introduce at ZUTTO are silk. Besides silk, there are also natural materials like wool, cotton, and linen.
Silk: The lustrous fabric that creates beautiful drape is truly one of a kind. When people think of scarves, silk holds an unshakable, top position.

Wool: A soft, gentle texture. Stylish, and also useful for warmth against the cold.

Cotton, Linen: An all-purpose item that works for both casual and elegant looks. Often features designs that are easy to incorporate into everyday wear.

If you're looking for something to recommend for a first scarf, here's an item like this.
・Solid colors, or patterns with few (small) colors and designs
For those who want to wear a stole in a more glamorous way, having lots of colors and patterns actually makes it easier to coordinate. But for beginners, we recommend starting with something simple so you can first get used to "yourself wearing a stole."
・Soft silk or cotton materials
These don't add too much volume, making it easy to appreciate the scarf's good qualities.
・Smaller sizes
This too helps keep the volume down, and we recommend starting with a smaller size that doesn't stand out too much.
From here, let us introduce some points for a relaxed coordination that feels like your shoulders are at ease.
POINT 1: Coordinate with casual items.
Pairing a scarf with a jacket and shirt gives a somewhat formal look, but with simple attire like denim and a cut-and-sew top, it becomes something you can easily coordinate on a daily basis.
A yellow stole paired with a big-sized sweatshirt and a gingham check linen skirt look. The casualness gets nicely balanced out.
POINT 2: Wrap it so as not to add volume

POINT 3: Match the tone of the scarf's color with your overall outfit

Pair a navy knit with a blue scarf. The scarf won't stand out too much, giving off a calm impression.
POINT 5: Try incorporating it as a hair or bag accessory
[Special Order] Scarf 65×65 (Yellow Orange)
When you think of a scarf, you probably imagine draping it around your neck or shoulders, but we also recommend starting by wrapping it like a hairband, or winding it around a bag handle.
Staff member M has always admired scarf-styled outfits but is a beginner herself. "There's a feature on scarves today, so I really want to make this my scarf debut," she said, so let's introduce how it went.
Staff M: I really admired the way models in overseas snapshots in magazines coordinated scarves with a casual, relaxed feel. When I was a student, I used to borrow my mother's scarves to wear to university, but as someone who had just graduated high school, a silk scarf seemed too mature for my face, and it somehow gave an unbalanced impression. So I used to wear hair accessories made from scarves I bought at a general goods store.

I've long admired the look of casually tying a large scarf around the neck like this. Eventually, I'd like to enjoy scarves this way, but for now, I want to start with pieces that are easy to incorporate.
1: MANTERO Silk Scarf (46×46)
It's small, so it seems easy for beginners to use as well. Depending on how you fold it, it can look like about three different colors, so I felt like the variety of outfits I could pair it with would triple too.
2: [Special Order] Scarf 43×43
This is a special-order scarf from angelo stanganini. It's a mini size, 43cm square, with a small kimono-style pattern (komon). All materials are sourced from regions with thriving textile industries in Italy, such as Como and Biella, and the entire production process is carried out within Italy as well, maintaining high quality standards. It's a silk scarf with good body that's easy to handle, and it has an elegant sheen.
What's nice about this scarf is that it features the same komon pattern used on neckties. It's easy to handle and pairs well even with casual outfits. It comes in yellow, orange, bordeaux, and blue-gray, and depending on the season, I'd love to coordinate it with makeup too—orange eyeshadow and lipstick with the yellow, or pink with the blue-gray.
Staff: This time, I decided to purchase the [Special Order] Scarf 43×43 (Blue-Gray)! The deciding factors were that it's a "mini size I can incorporate casually" and that it has "colors and patterns that aren't too elegant."
My hair has gotten long, and it was really bothersome having it blown around by the wind. I thought, why not tie my hair up and use the scarf as an accent? So I tried it, and sure enough, it looked really cute—I decided on the spot.
I'd been thinking it would go nicely with a navy T-shirt or a white basque shirt, but when I got home and tried it on with various things, I was happy to find it also matched perfectly with a gray shirt I'd bought recently. The small kimono-style pattern often used for neckties isn't really a common design for scarves, so it's great that even adults can use it as a hairstyle accent without looking too sweet. For the wrapping style shown in the photo above, I simply tied my hair with a hair tie and then wrapped the scarf around it once on top, so you'll need something like a pin to secure it—but if you thread the scarf through the hair tie from the start like this, I think it greatly reduces the worry of it slipping off and getting lost.
Pulling your hair back in a polished way as an adult is surprisingly tricky, isn't it? You want to hide the knot of the hair tie, which can look a bit too "everyday," but honestly, there's no time to style your hair differently each day. I'd been wishing for a hair accessory that hides the hair tie's knot, doesn't look overly cute, and still has some volume—so using a quality scarf for my hair felt like exactly the right fit for me. In winter, I'll pair it with the neckline of a sweater, and hope to gradually get used to a lifestyle that includes scarves.
Used like this as a single accent point, it seems easy even for beginners to incorporate
Since it's a necktie pattern, it can also be used as a men's pocket square. It would also be lovely to match one with your child or partner.
