When I hear "leather handbag," I think of the one my mother carried. It appeared at school events and family dinners with relatives—a grown-up, structured bag that I was rarely allowed to touch for fear of scratching it.
Now that I've become an adult myself, I often find myself attending occasions and gatherings beyond just meeting friends, and I frequently think about how I need to pay attention to my clothing, shoes, accessories, and bag for such formal settings.
This time, we're featuring bags from Mimi, a brand made with the question "what makes a good bag?" in mind, to answer that feeling of "I think it's about time I got one."
Just because you've reached an age society considers properly "adult" doesn't mean you stop loving casual outfits, or that ease of movement stops mattering. Still, you may notice that, depending on the occasion, there are more and more times when a polished look is called for.
People notice more than you'd expect, and settling for something makeshift can affect the impression you leave. More than anything, you want to feel confident and self-assured. You want something that leaves a good impression on others while also feeling comfortable to you—in other words, you want to find a bag "suited to your age."
That said, you may not want an expensive designer bag or a formal occasion bag from a department store either. Many people probably keep wondering "what actually makes a good bag?" without ever finding an answer.
What truly makes something "good"? Looking at Mimi's bags, you find the answer. It lies in an authentic design that doesn't chase trends, made with the assumption that it will be cherished and used for a long time.
A bag made from high-quality leather, cared for with attention, will last a long time. Given that, the design should be one that can be carried across the decades—a bag you'll love and use just the same whether you're in your 30s, having summoned a little courage to buy it, in your 40s, as it grows familiar, or in your 50s, as its sheen deepens.
It was with this thought in mind that designer Mimi Berry founded the brand Mimi in 2001. After studying fine art and fashion design, she began by making bags for friends after graduating. Gradually, her work found its way into select shops, and today her popularity has spread not only across the UK but throughout Europe, North America, and Asia.

The brand, which began with making bags for friends, manufactures everything within the UK, insisting on production kept within a range the designer can personally oversee and communicate about directly. This seems to reflect the designer's belief in valuing personal connections and taking responsibility for what she makes.

The leather used comes from the finest vegetable-tanned leather of Italy and Belgium. Vegetable tanning—using tannins extracted from tree bark, nuts, and fruit such as mimosa—is the oldest method of tanning leather. It takes time and effort, but vegetable-tanned leather develops an especially beautiful patina over time, letting you fully experience the pleasure of owning leather.
It's a leather with firmness and a crisp, polished look that suits Mimi's classic designs.
It may not carry a brand name everyone recognizes, but for those who want something reliably "good" with genuine substance behind it, Mimi's bags are exactly what answers that wish.
Compared to what people typically picture as an occasion bag, it may come across as a bit more casual. But for anyone who wants to stay true to themselves even in those tension-filled moments, it's sure to be the perfect bag.
Now, let's take a look at Mimi's bags one by one.
Formality level: ★★★★★
Among the Mimi bags ZUTTO introduces, this Leather Bag HEBE gives the most elegant impression. This slightly wide handbag uses firmer leather for a structured, classic look, with the gold hardware on the opening serving as an accent.
It's a size suited to formal gatherings while still fitting a long wallet, and it has one thin pocket each inside and outside.
Beyond its beauty, one of the great things about the Leather Bag HEBE is that it stands on its own. Viewed from the side, the base of the bag forms a W-shaped foot. Soft, slouchy leather bags feel nice to the touch, but when set down on a chair, they tend to flop over and lose their shape. The HEBE, by contrast, stays standing, composed as ever. Rather than a flat gusset across the entire base, the W shape seems designed to give the bag a smart profile when viewed from the side.

Since it comes with a removable shoulder strap, it works effortlessly whether you carry it as a handbag, wear it over the shoulder, or sling it casually crossbody.
HEBE comes in a MINI size, and being more compact, it has an elegant, clutch-bag-like quality.
This one also has a removable shoulder strap, so you can adjust it to suit the occasion. Though small, it's just the right size to fit the essentials like a wallet and phone, making it a great choice for occasions like being invited to a wedding.
Formality level ★★★☆☆
STAN has a smart, sophisticated air about it. This special-order PETROLIO was chosen by ZUTTO from Mimi's archive colors and produced once again; its subtly blue-tinged deep green brings out Mimi's refined quality even more. Thanks to its simple shape, it matches everything from elegant looks like dresses and long skirts to casual styles like knitwear.
The bag opens and closes with the twist-lock mechanism commonly seen on Mimi's signature bags; although there's no flap, it fastens securely.
There's one pocket inside the bag, perfect for keeping items you want to grab quickly or keep separate. The bag itself isn't small, but STAN's distinctive feature is that it looks sleek and streamlined thanks to its lack of gusset depth.
Formality level ★★★★☆
A shoulder bag with a classic feel, whose front hardware detail evokes vintage bags. Mimi bags often feature a "turn-lock" type hardware that you twist to open, as seen on the HEBE introduced above, but DAPHNE's horseshoe-shaped front hardware is a magnetic closure instead. Hooking your finger through the hardware allows for smoother opening and closing.
Among Mimi's bags, this one has a particularly wide gusset of 7.5cm, giving it more storage capacity than it appears and making it easy to use.
The shoulder strap can be doubled up to shorten it, letting you change your style depending on your mood that day.
Formality level ★★★☆☆
ERIC has a moderately casual look thanks to its small triangular flap. With a slim 4.5cm gusset, its three-dimensional stitching makes it easy to fit things inside. The sand color, not found in any other Mimi bag, shows the effects of aging particularly well, and you can enjoy watching it deepen into an amber hue over time.
Opening the flap reveals the main storage compartment. There are pockets on the inside and on the back panel,
The shoulder strap hardware is attached to the back rather than the sides of the bag, so when viewed from the front, the beauty of the bag itself stands out all the more.
Even though Mimi bags are made from durable, sturdy leather, we as users also need to be mindful about caring for them if we want to keep using them while they stay beautiful.
Use it in moderation, and let it rest in moderation
No matter how much you love a bag, if it's put to work day after day, it will wear out. If dust picked up outdoors is left sitting on the surface, the leather can't "breathe," which leads to deterioration.
After using it, please give it a light brushing with a leather brush and let it rest.
That said, keeping it tucked away all the time creates a different problem. Storing it in a closet for a long time in humid Japan can lead to mold. The best approach is to use it in moderation, and let it rest in moderation.
Things to keep in mind when storing your bag
So what should you keep in mind when storing your bag?
・Humidity is the enemy
As mentioned above, places where air doesn't circulate, such as inside a closet or a spot that's kept shut up, are not suitable for storage. Look for a good spot, such as somewhere with good airflow or on top of a shelf in your room. If you don't have such a place, be sure to take the bag out periodically and check that there are no problems with how it's being stored.
・Preventing loss of shape
Every Mimi bag is designed to hold its shape firmly. When storing it, empty out the contents and stuff it with towels instead. Newspaper works too, but since the ink could stain the interior, it's safer to wrap it in cloth first.
Also, be careful to place the bag somewhere it won't get crushed by other items.
To keep the leather nourished
Aside from daily brushing, be sure to regularly apply a leather cleaner and nourishing cream. If leather is allowed to dry out, it can lead to cracking, so check areas like the corners of the bag and spots that get a lot of friction, such as on shoulder bags, to see whether the leather needs moisturizing.
The cream we recommend is TAPIR's Lederpflege Creme. It's a cream-type leather wax made only from natural materials such as beeswax and carnauba wax. It protects the leather while bringing out a beautiful shine.
It comes in three colors: colorless, brown, and black. The image shows the colorless version.
The colorless cream can be used regardless of the leather's color. (Bag: Leather Shoulder Bag STAN)
With its refreshing scent derived from natural orange oil, it makes care time all the more pleasant. The cream spreads well even in small amounts and reaches into fine details, so it can be used not only for leather bags but also for shoes and belts.
The first time you apply the cream, please test it on the back or bottom of the bag to make sure it doesn't cause discoloration, unevenness, or staining.
