Then, now, and always. The classic canvas tote

Made from thick fabric, the canvas tote is a bag whose simple, iconic shape has made it a beloved everyday companion for so many people.

ZUTTO carries a good number of canvas totes. This time, we've picked out the following six items.

1. BASIC/TOTE: No. 6 canvas (approx. 24 oz), 866g

2. Garrison Carryall: 20 oz, 1086g

3. Boat Tote: 24 oz, 820g

4. tote bag: No. 9 (approx. 15 oz), 358g

5. Marché Folding Tote: No. 6 (approx. 24 oz), 314g

6. Canvas Coal Bag: 18 oz, 892g

The thickness of canvas fabric is measured in a unit called "ounces." The smaller the ounce number, the thinner the fabric; the larger the number, the thicker it becomes.

Right: tote bag: No. 9 (approx. 15 oz)

With all six items listed above, you can really feel the firmness of the canvas fabric the moment you pick them up, and most are thick enough to stand upright on their own. Sturdy fabric like this can support heavy loads without tearing, but keep in mind that the overall weight also depends on the bag's size and hardware, so a thicker fabric doesn't necessarily mean a heavier bag.

There are also many canvas totes that combine canvas with other materials.

Leather is a classic material used to boost a tote bag's durability. By using leather on the handles or base, a bag becomes better able to withstand even heavier loads. And since leather is a natural material, part of the enjoyment comes from watching its color and texture change over time as you use it.

Copper is often used to join or reinforce the various parts of a tote bag. With its faint gleam, copper serves not only as a subtle visual accent but also plays a key role in making a bag resistant to breakage and tearing.

One thing that matters most when choosing a bag is its capacity.

Does it have pockets?
Will a plastic bottle fit?
Will a laptop fit?
Will A4-size documents fit?
How many books or small items can it hold?

Sometimes you want to carry a full load, and other times you'd rather travel light. It's worth choosing the right bag to suit the occasion.

1. ARTS&CRAFTS BASIC/TOTE

A tote bag with a lovely combination of supple Chromexcel leather and canvas. Inside, you'll find a zippered pocket and an open pocket, both handy for storing valuables like keys or a phone.

With ample width and height, it's roomy enough to hold a magazine even standing upright. Tall items like a water bottle or a folding umbrella, as well as a laptop, fit comfortably inside as well.

Born from the brand's wish to create something built to last through changing trends, this bag lets you enjoy watching the leather and canvas gradually develop their own aging and character over time.

2. Winter Session Garrison Carryall

A bag defined by its boxy shape and striking leather handles. On the outside, large pockets on both the front and back let you store items you'll need right away. There are also pockets on both sides, roomy enough for a folding umbrella or a water bottle. With two more pockets inside, this is a truly convenient bag.

The construction of this bag speaks to its durability, and since it easily holds A4-size documents and a laptop, it's an item we'd especially recommend for business professionals.

3. Joshu+Vela Boat Tote

Compared to the BASIC/TOTE or the Garrison Carryall, the Boat Tote feels a touch smaller. It's compact in design, with two pockets inside. A4-size documents and a 17-inch laptop will fit if placed sideways.

It comes with leather handles and a shoulder strap, yet it doesn't feel especially heavy, making it a great choice not just for business but also as an everyday bag for weekend outings. It's a light, easy-to-carry canvas bag that women will find comfortable to use as well.

4. kurashiki canvas tote bag

This tote bag, made exclusively for ZUTTO, is crafted entirely from canvas fabric.

Designed with just-right sizing for everyday use, it won't fit a large laptop or a big stack of books, but it's perfect for anyone who wants to travel light with just the essentials, like a lunch box, wallet, or pouch. The colored lining on the inside also helps keep the contents out of view. Beyond letting you fully enjoy the distinctive texture of canvas fabric, it also comes in a wide range of colors, so we hope you'll find the shade that suits you best.

5. 6SHiKi Marché Folding Tote

As the name suggests, this is a canvas tote you'll want to use whenever you go shopping. Unfolded, it becomes a large tote, but because the fabric is so soft, it can be folded down to about the size of a notebook. It's roomy enough to hold tall PET bottles, of course, as well as bulky bags of vegetables or rice. It comes in handy not only for shopping but also when your luggage grows during outdoor trips or travel. Even though it can hold so much, the bag itself is made to be lightweight, while the sturdy canvas gives you the reassurance that it will properly support your belongings.

6. ESTEX Canvas Coal Bag

Originally used as a bag for carrying coal, this canvas tote is reassuringly large, with a sturdy riveted bottom. It can fit two blankets, plenty of books, and even tall items with ease.

For example, it can hold large outdoor items like camping gear and fishing equipment all at once, or bulky sports items like tennis rackets and soccer balls. It also works well as a storage bag to keep in the trunk of your car.

Because canvas totes get used so often, they tend to get dirty easily. Here are the basic ways to care for them.

・Brushing
・Dabbing with a cloth dampened with water and wrung out firmly
・Erasing with an eraser
・Hand washing

For dust on the bag, gently brush it off with a soft brush—the same kind you might use for clothing care works fine. For dirt or stains from soil, dab the spot with a cloth that has been dampened with water and wrung out firmly.

And surprisingly effective is an eraser. Since canvas totes are often light-colored, dark stains tend to stand out. Try rubbing everyday dirt with an eraser—depending on the type of stain, it may come right off.

For tote bags that don't use leather or metal parts, like the Kurashiki Canvas tote bag, hand washing is also possible. Wash gently by hand using a neutral detergent without fluorescent bleach, then dry in the shade.

*Even for bags that can be hand washed, we don't recommend using a washing machine or dryer, as this may cause color fading, changes in texture, or shrinkage.

After caring for your bag, store it somewhere well-ventilated and out of direct sunlight.

As you use it, a canvas tote will gradually develop wrinkles and take on a softened, well-worn look. Despite its simple shape, this practical canvas tote boasts high functionality and durability—do bring one along on your outings.
