What colors make up most of what you wear day to day? Color plays an important role in shaping impressions. Why not think about coordinating your outfit with attention to the colors of your bag and accessories?
It's said that color affects us psychologically, in the sense that seeing a color brings certain things to mind. For example, colors of differing brightness give us different impressions. Let's look at this effect using bags of varying brightness as an example.
The PATRICK STEPHAN leather bag frame flat graine (L.GRAY) is a shade close to white. Though originally flat in shape, this bag changes form as items are placed inside. Made from cowhide, its white color gives it a distinctly light and airy feel. High-brightness shades like this also lend a fresh impression, making them easy to wear even with lighter clothing.
The SUNSET CRAFTSMAN canvas bag SCCC 002 NATURAL/GREY has a shade slightly less bright than white. Such mid-tone colors retain a sense of lightness while blending more naturally with what you're wearing. Their appeal lies in how easily they pair with any outfit, regardless of the season.
This is the CaBas tote bag Small (Navy), which combines black and navy. Its surface features the raised texture characteristic of traditional Japanese sashiko weaving. Compared to the previous two bags, its lower brightness creates a greater sense of weight and substance, but this is also what gives darker colors like this their calm, mature character. If you'd still like to maintain a sense of lightness, choosing a smaller size is recommended.
For small items worn directly against the skin, such as accessories and watches, thinking in terms of a base color that suits your skin tone can help you find colors that work well for you. In the case of accessories, the chain, hardware, and motifs used can generally be divided into gold-toned and silver-toned colors, so it's a good idea to explore what suits you based on these two categories.
・Gold-toned accessories
Accessories in gold tones carry a certain warmth about them. Gold-toned accessories tend to suit a relatively wide range of people, pairing easily with skin and clothing and blending in naturally. The ARATA necklace/N1697 features a uniquely designed brass piece plated in gold, adorned with a washi (Japanese paper) pearl. Its gently gleaming gold offers just the right touch of glamour. The Hanamokko Kasane Nadeshiko watch has a belt and dial frame in gold tones, with a dial featuring a soft combination of pink and green. The bright coloring serves as an accent against the skin-friendly camel-colored belt.
・Silver-toned accessories
On the other hand, silver-toned accessories, being closer to white, stand out more vividly against the skin than gold tones do. They're helpful when you want to give your face a cleaner look or add an accent to your outfit. The ARATA earrings/P&E1692 feature rhodium plating and silver leaf. A subtly gleaming leaf-covered ball sits at the tip of a forked design, creating a refined atmosphere. The DAKARY beads bracelet S is a bracelet whose charm lies in its fine beadwork covering the entire surface. Choosing a silver tone makes it an eye-catching piece, and it pairs well with other colors, making it a good candidate for stacking.
When incorporating color into an outfit, it's important to consider not just the color of the item itself, but the balance of the entire coordination.
Take this coordination, for example. With the palette centered around gray tones throughout, this is what's known as a monotone coordination (using colors within the same family). In cases like this, keeping bags, shoes, and accessories in the same tone as your clothing prevents any single item from standing out awkwardly, allowing the whole outfit to come together.
This is another monotone coordination, this time built around blue tones. Only the bag is in a brownish shade, but since it's a skin-friendly gold tone and brown also appears in the dress and shoes, it blends in without feeling out of place.
Accent color item: B TOTE/XS (BEIGE)
Unlike monotone coordination, choosing an accessory in a color that contrasts with the base color has the effect of tightening up the overall look. Take this coordination, for example. At first glance, the red-and-white top, denim, and beige bag might seem like a mismatched combination of colors, but the yellow accent brings it together nicely. The beige bag neutralizes the contrasting colors of the top and bottom, and since it's a small size, it blends in naturally with the rest of the outfit.
Accent color items:
[Special order] Belt DOUBLE 3PLY BELT (PAPAYA)
Women's socks POLKA DOTS (Imperial Purple)
Not just bags—accessories like belts and socks can also serve as the perfect accent color. In this coordinate, a lighter brown belt and bordeaux socks with white dots become the accent pieces. Even a familiar outfit can take on a whole new atmosphere just by changing the color of a few small items.
There are many other ways of using color that can completely transform the impression of your everyday coordinates. Let's take a look at the different impressions created by some commonly heard color terms.
Monotone is generally used to describe variations in lightness and darkness among achromatic colors such as black, white, and gray. Because it expresses different tones within the same color family, it creates a cohesive overall look, making it no exaggeration to call monotone the basic color scheme of coordination. Creating a chic, unisex impression is another characteristic of monotone.
The ROSENDAHL ARNE JACOBSEN Watch STATION is made with a truly monotone color scheme of black and white. Because it's monotone, the dial is highly legible, giving the watch a practical color scheme suited to everyday wear. The neat, put-together impression it creates when worn may also be thanks to its monotone design. Available in two sizes, this watch can be worn by both men and women.
The REN Classic Pouch B5 catches the eye with its high-quality materials. Available in BLACK and PALE GRAY, both monotone colors, this pouch is sized to be held comfortably in one color while still creating an elegant impression. Bringing out the inherent beauty of the material itself is another charm unique to monotone color schemes.
In stark contrast to monotone, vivid colors are all about making a statement. Vivid, meaning "brightly colored," is eye-catching and perfect for serving as an accent color.
The angelo stanganini Scarf S. Its design features small flowers scattered across a vivid red background, and despite being a small scarf, it makes plenty of an impression. It looks great wrapped casually around the wrist or neck as an accent to your outfit, or attached to a bag as a decorative touch.
The FALBE Bunch Necklace features beads in vivid colors. With blue, green, and orange vivid tones combined in a well-balanced way, this necklace creates an impression of gorgeousness and vitality.
Bicolor refers to the combination of two different colors. Since complementary colors are often used, depending on the combination, it can either serve as an accent color or, unlike vivid colors, avoid being too assertive—making it a color scheme that also creates a mature, sophisticated impression.
The SUNSET CRAFTSMAN CO. Canvas Bag SCCV002 features a distinctive bicolor design. By combining natural camel color with vivid blue and pink, it becomes a truly one-of-a-kind canvas bag.
This is the TO LABO Earring and Pierce. With a design where only the upper half of the natural stone is colored, these earrings can change their expression by adjusting the chain length. Compared to a single solid color, the bicolor design has a certain playfulness, evoking the relaxed confidence of adulthood. It's truly a color combination meant to be chosen by grown-ups.
Earth colors evoke nature—the blue of the sky, the green of the trees, the brown of the earth. They blend well with the skin and offer casual, easy-to-wear tones that are also approachable for men.
6SHiKI is a bag brand that uses thick canvas as its material. It's also a brand rich in earth colors, such as a blue-tinged gray and a plant-like khaki. The Shoulder Tote is a 2-way type that can be carried over the shoulder or held by hand. The bonsac drawstring shoulder bag can also be worn crossbody or over one shoulder. Bags in earth colors that anyone can easily carry are perfect as everyday bags. As you use them, the fabric gradually softens—a charm unique to 6SHiKi that you'll get to enjoy over time.
