A carefully edited selection of items for a minimal outing—a bag with a built-in wallet function

Carefully choosing only the essentials and heading out with a small bag lightens the load on both mind and body. But at times like these, the size and weight of your wallet inevitably become a concern. These days, when so many payments can be made with a credit card or an IC transit card, it's clear that the need for a large wallet has diminished. One option is simply to swap the contents into a smaller wallet to match a smaller bag—but we wondered whether building the wallet function directly into the bag itself might let you travel even lighter. That thought is how this 3WAY WALLET BAG project began.

We created this together with STANDARD SUPPLY, a bag and accessories brand that's popular at ZUTTO as well. Asking themselves "What do you really need?", the brand aims to create products that are loved for a long time, with a clean design that lets you feel the beauty of empty space.

The leather used in STANDARD SUPPLY's PAL series is supple and soft, fitting comfortably in the hand. It was last spring when we proposed making a custom bag using this leather. After careful discussions and repeated prototyping, the result is a mini leather bag that's not only functional but also makes you want to carry it out with you.

Inspired by the structure of PAL's wallet series, this bag has three pouches connected in an accordion shape, with storage spaces also built between each part, giving it five compartments in total.

The larger compartments at the front and back are sized to fit a paperback book and a smartphone side by side, standing upright.

Between them, we've built in a wallet function.

Card holder: Three vertical slot pockets (each holds 2 to 3 cards)

Coin pocket: A zippered compartment about 9cm deep makes coins inside easy to see and find.

Bill compartment: Placed between the coin pocket and the rear storage compartment. This too has a depth that makes it easy to take things out.

We've also added a thin pocket on the back of the bag for an IC transit card.

The convenience of simply opening the bag to take out coins or bills without hunting for your wallet.

This is especially recommended for people like this, and for scenes like these.

Of course, even if you don't use it as a wallet, the divided pockets are well suited to holding small odds and ends. You can put lip balm or keys in the card slots, and the zippered coin compartment can hold accessories you don't want to lose.

Depending on the outfit or occasion, the way a bag is best carried also changes. That's why we had original hardware made so the bag can be carried three ways: "crossbody," "over the shoulder," and as a "clutch."

・Crossbody

A casual way to carry it, leaving both hands free and light.

The shoulder strap is about 126cm long, and since it uses slim leather, you can tie it at whatever length you like when wearing it crossbody.

・Over the shoulder, hand-carried

Looping the strap's hardware through twice gives it just the right length for wearing over the shoulder, adding a slightly more formal touch.

Remove the shoulder strap and tuck the hardware inside, and it becomes a clutch bag.

The snap button was also made as a leather-covered button, giving it a simple, elegant look. Large bags never quite suit formal occasions, so a small bag like this—one that still fits the essentials like cash and makeup—comes in handy.

The main material used is nappa leather made in Italy. It comes from one of Italy's largest tanneries, one with a long track record of supplying many famous maison brands, and this leather is tanned by selecting only the finest of the European hides that this tannery sources. It has a soft texture that makes the most of chrome tanning, and the surface is finished with a semi-aniline treatment. Its character lies in a colorful yet richly layered, translucent appearance.

【Care for Long-Term Use】

◇After use, wipe with a soft dry cloth or brush gently.

◇Unless the leather becomes especially dry, moisturizing cream isn't necessary.

◇If applying leather cream, first test it on an inconspicuous area to check for any color change before use.

◇If the bag gets wet from rain or similar, don't leave it as is—wipe it immediately with a soft cloth and dry it in a well-ventilated, shaded spot.

◇The inside of the bag is made of suede. Please brush the interior regularly as well, so that fine dust and dirt don't settle into the material.
