Three impressions a worn-out T-shirt gives

So why exactly does a T-shirt start to look "old" in the first place?

Broadly speaking, there are three reasons.

① Stretched-out fabric

The shirt is still wearable, but it's lost its original silhouette and no longer looks sharp.

By far the biggest culprit here is stretched-out, misshapen fabric.

In particular, the neckline, armholes, and hem are three spots that, due to how the garment is constructed, are especially prone to stretching out of shape

and, despite their small area, have a big impact on overall appearance.

② Stains

A splash of pasta sauce you didn't even notice at the time,

or a single soy sauce stain sitting there like a beauty mark….

We've all been there. This is especially noticeable on T-shirts in white or beige tones.

③ Fading

On the other hand, fading is what stands out on T-shirts in vivid colors

or in deep tones like black or navy.

A slightly faded T-shirt can still look great depending on how you style it,

but of course, we'd rather keep that original vivid color intact.

The right way to use a laundry net

What ultimately determines how long a T-shirt lasts is simply how you wash it at home.

Precisely because it's a garment you can casually wash and wear again and again,

paying attention to just a few small points each time you do laundry

can go a long way toward preventing unwanted stretching and fading.

First, check the care instructions on the quality label.

Don't underestimate this just because it's "only a T-shirt."

Depending on the printing method or the fabric's blend of materials,

some shirts can't be tumble-dried or ironed.

Labels on items made overseas can be especially hard to interpret, so be careful.

① Do not wash in water

② Do not use bleach

③ Do not dry clean

④ Dry cleaning by a professional is possible

⑤ Do not tumble dry

⑥ Do not iron

Once you're ready to wash the shirt in water,

check it thoroughly for any "stains you didn't notice" before putting it in the washing machine.

Doing this one extra step gives you the chance to treat a stain before it sets in for good.

And the main reason the neckline, collar, and hem end up stretched out of shape is actually because garments get tangled up with each other in the wash.

A T-shirt has no hooks or fasteners to catch on, and its construction is simple, so

it's true you could get away without a laundry net.

But to prevent the fabric itself from stretching out of shape as it tangles with other clothes,

using a laundry net is definitely the way to go.

When you do, try to put just one shirt in each net.

If you stuff the net so full of clothes that it's bursting at the seams,

the washing effect will weaken, and the garments can still tangle with each other inside the net, so be careful.

Also, for shirts where fading or color transfer is a concern,

・Choose a detergent suited to the color, such as one formulated for whites or for dark colors

・Turn the shirt inside out, fold it, and place it in the laundry net

・Wash with a store-bought color-catching sheet

Taking steps like these will give you extra peace of mind.

How to dry your shirt to prevent the neckline from stretching out

Drying flat is best whenever possible,

but given space constraints and the sheer number of shirts, it's not always practical to lay everything out flat every time.

Using a hanger is the usual way to dry a T-shirt,

but if you're not careful, you can end up with problems like

・the neckline stretching out

・odd marks appearing at the shoulders because the hanger doesn't match the shirt's dimensions

These issues tend to crop up more easily than you'd expect.

If the shoulders keep slipping off the hanger,

it helps to wrap a rubber band or a small towel around the spot on the hanger where the slipping occurs,

creating a simple stopper before you hang the shirt up to dry.
