Comparing How Two People Wear It 〜TEXTURE WE MADE Selvedge Straight Jeans Edition〜

This is our "Comparing How Two People Wear It" series, where we introduce how the same item feels when worn by two different people. This time, the star of the show is a pair of made-in-Japan jeans from TEXTURE WE MADE (Texture We Made※), a brand based in Kojima, Okayama Prefecture—the sacred ground of denim—that continues to make denim pants and jeans using traditional methods while staying free of convention. In an age overflowing with things, what you wear and what you own is entirely up to you, but there must be a reason when two different people end up choosing the very same item. Our ZUTTO colleague in Tokyo is currently working remotely, so this conversation took place online.

Why Two Different People Each Chose the Same "Straight Jeans"

Planning staff M:

Has been a fan for 1 year, purchased size S. In charge of planning and overall management of special-order items. Wears skirts and pants about equally. Loves clothes that feel comfortable to wear.

App staff T:

Has been a fan for 1 year, purchased size S. In charge of product pages and app updates. Rarely wears skirts and is more of a pants person. Loves simple outfits.

―You two are both wearing the same jeans this time. What made you decide to buy them?

T: I'm in charge of updating the product pages, and when I saw the photos from the shoot, I fell in love at first sight thinking "so cute!" I've always liked denim and had a few pairs, but I didn't have any thick, dark-colored denim. It was a shape that seemed like it should exist but somehow didn't, so I decided almost instantly (laughs).

M: I wanted them after seeing T try them on (laughs). I have a few pairs of skinny denim I bought a few years ago, but they don't quite match my mood these days, so I was looking for something wider in the leg. I tried on a few wide pants with distinctive silhouettes, but they just didn't seem to suit my body type, and I couldn't quite bring myself to buy any. Then I found these jeans, and thought, this shape that's neither slim nor wide is just right! So I decided almost instantly too (laughs).

―So even with several pairs of denim already, you were drawn to these Selvedge Straight Jeans.

T: There are really so many designs of women's denim pants out there, so I try to add to my collection little by little. TEXTURE WE MADE's jeans are made in Kojima, Okayama—the sacred ground of denim—and I feel they really suit the Japanese body type well. There's a certain craftsman spirit to them, but also a sense of approachability.

M: The skinny denim I own had lately only been something I'd wear under a dress, but now that these jeans have entered my wardrobe, I've been able to put together some really fresh outfits. The Chantecler cut-and-sew top that T and I both have in different colors also goes really well with these jeans.

T: The reversible short sleeve, right! I pair them together often. As for the look, I also love how it makes the back view look neat—the legs look straight and the seat looks perky. I have a few pairs of jeans, but ever since buying these, I've been wearing only these (laughs).

―It seems like you two often end up with the same items from ZUTTO, like that cut-and-sew top. Could that be related to you both being in the mid-150cm range in height?

M: I think that's true! When I wear it, having volume in the lower body can sometimes make things look a bit too much. But the fact that it's straight-leg yet high-waisted makes it easier to balance the look, which I really like. I always tuck the top in—how about you, T?

T: I also tend to tuck it in because I want to emphasize the high waist. I keep the tops compact to create a vertical silhouette and give a sleek look.

―Both of you chose size S.

T: That's right. Bottoms are often chosen based on waist size, but from hearing about which sizes fit other people who've tried them on, I think the key for these jeans is the combination of height and hip measurement.

M: Given our height, both T and I have relatively some room to spare even in size S. From what I've heard, people around 160cm tend to suit size M, and those in the upper 160cm range suit size L.

―If you had to give a tip for choosing the right size?

M: Since these are high-waisted jeans, I think the hip measurement is important. It's ideal if the waist fits too, of course, but if the hip size doesn't match, you won't be able to wear them at all.

T: The jeans themselves stretch a bit around the hips as you wear them, then shrink back when washed, repeating that cycle—so it might be better to have a little extra room. If you're torn between two sizes and a snug fit around the stomach feels uncomfortable, going with the larger size might be the better choice. And if it doesn't fit, ZUTTO accepts size exchanges too, so you can shop with peace of mind.

M：Something someone once told me was, "Nowadays, styles where the tops take center stage are common. A silhouette with just the right amount of ease is easy to coordinate with, and that's good." I feel that, in keeping with the times, rather than squeezing your body into small clothes, choosing the perfect size that suits your current mind and body might be the secret to loving something for a long time.

What Their Styling Reveals About How Each of Them Wears It

―What kind of cut-and-sew tops do you usually pair with these jeans?

M：I tend to go for tops in fairly rough, casual fabrics. Things like plain T-shirts or sleeveless tops.

T：I wear T-shirts a lot too. Even a casual look ends up looking put-together, so I find them really handy.

―T, I noticed you're wearing sandals in the photos!

T：I love sandals, haha. Since these are straight-leg jeans, I like that you can adjust the length depending on the shoes. M, what kind of shoes do you usually wear?

M：One of my favorite looks is pairing them with dansko clogs. I also like having fun with colorful socks. I think these pants go well with just about any shoe.

T：I know exactly what you mean! They're so easy to match with any shoe—red ballet flats, high-top sneakers, socks with leather shoes... Since they have a clean, polished look, heels look great with them too.

―Did the two of you wear these pants during the winter as well?

M：Yes! I think they can be worn all year round. In winter, I actually paired them with a chunky sweater! They don't add too much bulk to the lower body, which makes them just right.

T：I wore them in winter too. Unlike M, I think I tended to go with thinner sweaters! Unless it's the depths of winter, I think these can be worn actively all year round.

M：It's nice that you don't have to be too picky about tops even in winter, isn't it?

The Story Told by an Object: Comparing How They've Aged

―Since you both started wearing these exactly a year ago, have you noticed any changes from when you first started wearing them to now?

T：(Checking the actual jeans) There isn't much fading yet... There are some wear creases, but it's still not that pronounced. I feel like the leather patch at the waist has darkened a bit, though.

M：For mine, I think the honeycomb creases behind the knees have started to fade a little.

―Speaking of how jeans change, I'm also curious about stretching and shrinking.

T：They do stretch out with continued wear, but I feel like washing them resets that somewhat. As I wear them in and wash them, they get softer, so my impression is that they've stretched a little to fit my body.

M：Same for me. Since these aren't non-washed rigid denim, as long as you're a bit careful, they don't change so much that the size feels different.

Questions Only Fellow Fans Would Dare Ask: "How Do You Handle This?"

①How do you wash them?

M：I basically only wash them when the dirt starts to bother me. Normally I just spray on some deodorizer and hang them to dry in the shade.

T：I don't wash mine very often either... When I do, I turn them inside out, put them in a laundry net, and use a detergent made for denim. Since I bought these because I liked the dark indigo color, I want to keep the fading as gentle as possible.

M：Wow, impressive! I'm kind of lazy about it—when I do wash mine, I just throw all the dark-colored clothes together in one load, haha. With laundry for the whole family, there just isn't enough time... Maybe because I haven't been as careful, there's a difference in how much they've faded after a year compared to T's? ②Do you cuff the hem of your jeans, or leave them as is?

M：I cuff mine! I fold them once, about 2cm. Since these are selvedge jeans made on an old-style loom, I really want to show that off.

T：Ah, the so-called "red selvedge," right? I cuff mine too. I fold them twice, adjusting so my ankles just peek out. Since I wear a lot of flat shoes, I like to keep my ankles looking neat.

M：I guess we both want to make the most of what makes these jeans special.
