Wajima lacquerware's finishing process, known as "roiro," involves layering raw lacquer and polishing it by hand to achieve a lustrous finish. This elegant luster cannot be achieved by either under-polishing or over-polishing; the exquisite balance is a true testament to the craftsman's skill. Masui Saihon Kanshitsu accessories embody this roiro technique.
These earrings are a special order item based on the original Nuance Gold Series, but the lacquer beads have been made one size smaller and paired with hook-shaped earrings. Finished with multiple layers of natural lacquer applied to a pearl nucleus, these earrings have a warm look not found in glass or natural stones. The soft light reminiscent of pearls adds a subtle touch of elegance to the face.

Feel the scenery of Noto
These [special order] Nuance Gold hook earrings have a small motif, but they make a statement. We envisioned these earrings as earrings that could be worn on both ordinary days and special occasions, and we consulted with them to create them.
While the base of lacquerware is typically wood, these earrings are made from pearl nuclei, the cores of cultured pearls. Made by cutting bivalve shells, shaping them into perfect circles, and polishing them, they are known for their hardness and low lacquer absorption, making them ideal for lacquering. These earrings are crafted by carefully applying layers of natural lacquer to the pearl nuclei.
This lacquering process is supported by the artisanal skill known as "roiro," which is the heart of Wajima lacquerware. Among the 124 steps in Wajima lacquering, this crucial step is near the final stage. Roiro artisans repeatedly apply additional layers of lacquer to the top coat and polish it, creating a lacquer surface that feels beautiful to the touch. The earrings are further coated with a clear coating, and the metal parts are made of skin-friendly surgical stainless steel, so there's no need to worry about allergies.
The colors evoke the tranquility and beauty of Noto's landscapes. Choose from three colors: "kinu," which evokes the softness of a cocoon; "sakura," which evokes the faint color of spring cherry blossoms; and "sora," which reflects the Noto sky.
With only a handful of Wajima roiro artisans left, this precious craft is a rare sight. These earrings are crafted with such delicate skill that they require varying polishing methods and frequency depending on the condition of the wood and the drying time of the lacquer. These exquisite pieces truly showcase the artisan's skill. These earrings, colorfully flattering to the wearer, come in a small presentation box, making them ideal for milestone gifts for loved ones. They're also recommended as a gift for special occasions like coming-of-age ceremonies and birthdays.
Masui Saihon Kanshitsu (Masui Saihon Kanshitsu) began in 1955 as the Masui Roiro Shop. Roiro is an important technique, almost the final step in the Wajima lacquerware process. The surface is prepared with charcoal, then coated with raw lacquer, and polished repeatedly by hand to achieve a mirror-like shine. Maki-e (lacquerware) is then applied, and the lacquer is then decorated with abalone shells, gold powder, and silver powder. Masui Saihon Kanshitsu has been responsible for these crucial foundational processes.
In 1997, the second generation took over and the name was changed to "Masui Saihon Kanshitsu." While preserving the Roiro technique, the company is also experimenting with new forms of lacquerware, such as jewelry and prayer beads. While preserving tradition, we propose new ways of using lacquer that are suited to the modern era. This is based on our desire to cherish the warmth of handcrafted work and to let more people know about the charm of lacquer.
