Born in France in 2005, "VEJA" is a fair-trade shoe brand whose products are assembled by hand, one by one, by local artisans using materials sourced through clean methods. With a production process where both producers and consumers can see what's happening, and sneakers that combine simplicity, cleanliness and functional beauty, it's easy to understand why VEJA has so many fans around the world. The brand is especially popular in Europe, particularly in France where awareness of the SDGs runs high, and in Japan it has won the support of fashion-conscious women with a keen eye for quality.

VEJA was founded in France by François-Ghislain Morillion and Sébastien Kopp, friends since high school, and its name means "to see" in Portuguese. It embodies a question—"What lies on the 'other side' of a shoe?"—and the hope that it might inspire people to look toward the "other side" of manufacturing. Behind VEJA lies a production background built on carefully chosen materials and visible makers, and within it you can feel the stories and human connections that brought it all together.

VEJA's sneaker-making begins at the very source, with the creation of raw materials. For example, the rubber used in the soles is produced under contract with local rubber farmers in Brazil. Working within the vast wilderness of the Amazon rainforest, they harvest natural rubber using a classic method: making an incision in a wild-growing rubber tree, attaching a collection cup, and gathering the milky-white sap.

The natural rubber that's harvested is refined by the farmers themselves on the very same day, while it's still fresh, producing a high-quality rubber with excellent viscosity. By mixing in a coagulant within an hour of harvesting, then filtering it and forming it into sheets, oxidation of the rubber is prevented, purity is increased, and the resulting footwear feels supple to wear.
Rubber farmers typically sell the raw rubber itself, and primary products like this tend to have low added value. But by having the farmers refine and ship the rubber they've harvested themselves, direct trade becomes possible without intermediaries, allowing the farmers to receive fair compensation.
Another raw material, canvas fabric, is produced from start to finish by contracted organic cotton farmers, also grown and produced in the natural landscapes of Brazil.

VEJA also sometimes uses fabric made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Called ALVEOMESH, this mesh material was born from VEJA's commitment to upcycling and offers excellent breathability, flexibility and lightness.
In fact, VEJA was the first brand to use a fabric made entirely from recycled plastic bottles in sneakers. The midsole is made with 52% sugarcane, and the outsole uses 42% bio-based materials (12% Amazonian natural rubber and 30% rice husks), reflecting an uncompromising approach to every material choice.

VEJA is a sneaker brand that's mindful of both the environment and society. But what makes it appealing isn't only its classic look and its fair-trade, organic materials—it's that these values serve as the foundation for genuinely high design and functionality.
What to Pair with Which Bottoms?
The CAMPO series stands out for its slightly textured chrome-free leather, making it the most mannish yet polished option. It pairs nicely with clean ribbed socks and slacks or sweatpants.

The VENTURI series has a thicker sole that absorbs shock as you walk, giving it outstanding comfort. Paired with a dress or a voluminous skirt, it doesn't make your feet look small, so the proportions stay balanced. The panels are made with knit fabric woven to stretch and fit the foot, and by knitting them as a single piece, seams and seam allowances are kept to a minimum.

This is the ESPLAR series, beautiful with its smooth, sleek leather. It's easy to balance with slim pants or a tight skirt. With a limited color range, it's simple to coordinate, feels light on the feet, and unlike chunky high-tech sneakers, the sole isn't too thick—making it a great choice for anyone who wants a more polished look.
