How KARHU's Innovative Footwear Came to Be

Founded in 1916 in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, the sports shoe brand "KARHU" takes its name from the Finnish word for "bear." The brand began as a small woodworking workshop making skis and javelins for track and field. In 1920, Paavo Nurmi, one of the Flying Finns (a nickname used to honor world-renowned Finnish athletes), wore these Finnish-made shoes to win nine Olympic gold medals, significantly raising KARHU's profile.

At the time, while there were many shoes designed for competition, there weren't many running shoe options suited for everyday training, and athletes wanted shoes they could actually use during competition-level training. KARHU was quick to release highly functional shoes equipped with padding to protect the feet and arch support. This established the brand's position as a leading maker of competition footwear and made it a beloved national brand. Today, KARHU has expanded well beyond competition shoes to also offer a wide range of sneakers for everyday town wear.

With a history spanning over 100 years since its founding, KARHU continues to develop innovative footwear every day, drawing on traditional techniques and functionality with the hope of letting people experience the "joy of running."

KARHU's Philosophy and Principles

Since its founding, KARHU has cherished the spirit of "SISU," a concept that represents the inner tenacity of the Finnish people—the strength and courage to keep fighting even in situations where one might otherwise give up, along with strong will and decisiveness. With this SISU philosophy at its core, KARHU crafts products without compromising on either functionality or design.

KARHU's brand concept is also expressed in the phrase "FUN LIFE, FUN RUN."
While running farther and faster is certainly one way to enjoy the experience, KARHU believes that life itself becomes richer when we simply run through the city and nature, sometimes stopping freely along the way to make new discoveries. This philosophy and set of principles is the driving force behind their continued creation of shoes brimming with originality.

A Closer Look at KARHU's Five Signature Series

Synchron Classic

The Synchron series of shoes first appeared in the 1980s. The Synchron Classic, a 1990s model, introduced an innovative lacing system that fits all the way to the pinky toe for a better-fitting upper. (pictured above)

The shoe also features the Air Cushion unit, the first patented cushioning system for running shoes, which stabilizes the heel. When you actually try them on, the thick cushioning moves flexibly, providing a comfortable, secure hold. The sole is equipped with a proprietary air cushion for excellent shock absorption, giving your steps a springy bounce that makes you want to start running. That's why these sneakers are so comfortable that you'll find yourself reaching for them at the door—they help reduce fatigue whether you're commuting long distances or standing all day at work.

Fusion 2.0

フュージョン2.0 KH804139

Fusion 2.0 KH804139

The FUSION 2.0 is a renewed model of the FUSION, which was the top running shoe in KARHU's 1996 collection. This pair enhances fit by linking the trademark M-line with the shoelaces, resulting in KARHU's signature design. With its sporty look—featuring round shoelaces and a pull tab at the heel—this series is distinguished by its careful use of different materials, such as suede and mesh, for different parts of the upper. Compared to other series, it uses more colors, with exquisite color combinations that add flair to your feet.

When you try them on, the thick cushioning moves flexibly, providing a comfortable, secure hold. Although these are inherently lightweight shoes, the excellent fit makes them feel even lighter than their actual weight.

The "M logo" is the only trademark used on running shoes that stands for "Mestari," meaning "champion" in Finnish. While the M logo appears on other series as well, having it integrated into the design of the shoelaces is unique to the Fusion.

Some models within the Fusion 2.0 series were designed around a particular theme.

Fusion KH804134

The Fusion KH804134, part of the "ORIENTEERING PACK" series, features coloring inspired by the landscapes, maps, markers, and equipment that make up the sport of orienteering, resulting in an urban, sophisticated design. (*Orienteering is a sport that originated in the Nordic countries, in which participants navigate through hills and forests to reach checkpoints marked on a map, competing for the fastest time to the finish.)

These two pairs form a collection inspired by fantastical constellations and the night sky. The midsole features an inverted triangular component called "FULCRUM." This is a KARHU-original technology that uses the principle of leverage—allowing even heavy loads to be lifted with minimal force—to convert the energy from landing into forward propulsion, reducing impact on the feet and enabling smooth, efficient strides.

Aria

アリア KH803094

Aria KH803094

The Aria series debuted in 1995, originally designed as a running shoe. Its design draws on the functional features of that era; it eliminates the shoe tongue and adopts an insock structure in which the upper and the interior of the shoe are integrated, achieving a light, comfortable wearing feel along with a stable hold. There's no need to worry about the tongue shifting while walking, and when actually worn, the thick cushioning moves flexibly, providing a surprisingly comfortable hold. The sole fits snugly against the sole of the foot, offering a comfortable feel and reliably supporting a smooth, forward stride. Additionally, although it was originally designed as a lightweight shoe, the high level of fit makes it feel even lighter than its actual weight. The suede upper keeps things breathable and easy to wear even in cooler weather, and the color palette is relatively understated. Its round laces and tongue-less design are distinctive features.

レガシー KH806021

The Legacy 96 is a modern update of the "LEGACY," which debuted in 1996. The original LEGACY featured a proprietary air cushion, a sandwich-structure heel cap, and an EVA midsole, making it a running shoe known for excellent cushioning and stability. What sets it apart from other models is the modern design of the M logo on the side. The upper combines suede with breathable nylon, resulting in a sporty, easy-to-wear sneaker. With its sporty color palette and flat laces, it's a model well-suited for everyday town use.

KARHU sneakers are packed with attention to detail, and their appeal lies in their distinctively Nordic color combinations as well as the impressive support you notice once you actually put them on. Even within the KARHU brand, the design and background behind each series can vary quite a bit, which may make it a bit tricky to choose which one to go with.
