Daikan, said to be the coldest point of the year, has now passed, and January is already coming to a close before we know it. Cold days are still ahead, but new spring arrivals are beginning to come in from each brand. This time, we'd like to introduce an original work shirt that has just been released.

Made from a fabric that's thick yet soft and supple to the touch, it can be worn from now through early spring, and feels like the kind of piece that gently pushes you toward the next season.

Something rarely seen in our original apparel until now—a piece that brings in a work-inspired taste—the Cotton Linen Wool Viyella Work Shirt.

Tailored from natural materials to give it a soft look that's easy to pair with everyday clothes, it still carries the fine, thoughtful details that make a work shirt feel like a work shirt—details that stir up a sense of style. It has become a piece that feels distinctly ZUTTO, one you'll want to reach for year after year.

A work shirt, as the name suggests, is originally a shirt meant to be worn while working, and today it exists as its own category of fashion item.

Because its origins lie in workwear, most work shirts are designed with function and practicality in mind—using sturdy, rugged fabric and featuring pockets on both sides of the chest. What we aimed for, amid all that, was an adult's work shirt: one that honors that workwear feel while still carrying the distinct sensibility of ZUTTO.

While preserving vintage details, we set out to make a shirt that could be worn casually and grow more beloved over time—not through a heavy, hard-wearing fabric, but through one with a gentle texture that still holds up to long use.

Some of the details we incorporated were once commonly used on old work shirts but are rarely seen today. We hope you'll enjoy discovering them down to the smallest points.

- The "gacha-poke," with its fun asymmetry between left and right

What catches your eye right away is the so-called "gacha-poke"—pockets with different designs on the left and right. On the left is a mountain-shaped pocket known as a yama-poke, while on the right sits a distinctive pocket combining a watch pocket for storing a pocket watch with a pen slot.

On most watch pockets, the opening faces sideways, and this is apparently to keep a pocket watch tucked into the chest from falling out when leaning forward. Few people carry pocket watches these days, but knowing this bit of history makes it all the more exciting.

- Cat-eye buttons, once widely used on vintage work shirts

A cat-eye button, as the name suggests, is a button shaped like a cat's eye.

This type of button was often used on work shirts, and thanks to its shape, the thread that secures it doesn't show on the front, meaning it's less prone to fraying. It's most often found on vintage work shirts, though it's said to still be used on some military shirts today.

- A chin strap that doubles as protection against the cold

At the neck sits a chin strap whose role is to keep the collar from flapping about. Since it covers the area around the neck, it also helps guard against the cold.

This is a feature seen on work shirts and coveralls from before the 1930s, and for ZUTTO's Cotton Linen Wool Viyella Work Shirt, we chose a chin strap designed as an extension of the stand collar.

- A name tag standing in for the "union ticket"

A name tag is stitched onto the back of the left placket, standing in for what was once called a "union ticket."

A "union ticket" was proof that a garment came from a manufacturer affiliated with a labor union, and it was stitched onto the back of the placket or hem. At the time, labor unions encouraged workers to choose workwear bearing such tickets, and it's said that workers used this as a standard when selecting their garments. This detail disappeared in the 1970s, but some makers still incorporate it as a design element on work shirts today.

Beyond that, the underarm gussets and the rounded yoke on the back are other points we paid close attention to.

The medium-weight viyella fabric I chose—a blend of cotton, linen, and wool—is brushed and made with wool for a plump, warm look, while still keeping the crisp, natural texture typical of natural materials. I think it's just right for when you want both "warmth" and a "spring-like" feel.

Basic and easy to coordinate, available in two colors: IVORY and NAVY.

The supple softness from the washer finish and the relaxed texture of the fabric are also part of its appeal. Since the yarn is dyed before weaving, you can enjoy its distinctive character.
