When did our longing for cashmere first begin? Precisely because it is luxurious and delicate, it is a pleasure reserved for grown-ups. Perhaps cashmere is something we come to want as we grow older, when our sense of what we truly love and what suits us becomes more refined, and at the same time we begin to see what we ought to own. The cashmere ZUTTO offers is made for women living in the present day, pursuing a balance of quality, design, and price as a first step toward owning this material of longing—cashmere.
This time, small accessory items are joining the Mongolian Cashmere series as an introduction to the line. Let's take a look at exactly what makes Mongolian cashmere knitwear so wonderful.
This Mongolian Cashmere series uses cashmere raised in Mongolia, where winter temperatures can drop as low as –30°C. To survive such harsh conditions, cashmere goats grow a coarse, thick outer coat, but beneath it lies a thin, long, soft undercoat—and it is this undercoat that becomes the raw material for warm cashmere. The finer the fiber, the more air it traps, allowing it to act as insulation that keeps body heat from escaping, and this Mongolian cashmere boasts a remarkably fine diameter of just 14 to 16 microns. It has a surprisingly smooth feel, and because its fibers are much longer than those of other cashmere, it has a natural sheen and a durability that resists pilling. Light, warm, and relatively sturdy—these are the qualities that make Mongolian cashmere so good.
Behind this material lies a story of sustainable production that continues while protecting the way of life of Mongolian nomads. The nomadic people who live across Mongolia's vast lands move from place to place together with their cashmere goats and other livestock, as members of the same family. In spring, before the goats' hair naturally sheds, the nomads comb out the soft undercoat by hand, gathering it in a way that places no undue burden on the animals. In recent years, some regions have suffered from overgrazing and desertification of grasslands as fast fashion brands seek to source cashmere more cheaply. However, the nomads from whom ZUTTO sourced cashmere for this collection continue this traditional way of life, raising their goats through free-range grazing in a rich natural environment, free from stress.
The factory that knits our sweaters is also a member of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA) , an organization working to protect the future of cashmere production in Mongolia and China. Guided by the belief that "beautiful materials should remain beautiful as they carry on into the future," the SFA carries out careful initiatives such as minimizing the burden on the natural environment, ensuring animal welfare, valuing the people involved, and supporting the continuation of local culture. This is what creates cashmere whose beauty extends beyond the material itself—cashmere with a beautiful story behind it.
Building a relationship in which everyone—the raw material suppliers, the production factory, and ZUTTO—receives fair compensation: this is the main reason we chose Mongolian cashmere. Because we can deal almost directly with the factory in Mongolia, keeping intermediary margins low, we have been able to offer the kind of cashmere ZUTTO has always envisioned: "cashmere at a fair price, made to be loved for a long time." No matter how excellent the material, without a story worth reaching out for and a price that feels reasonable, it cannot hold true value. Behind our arrival at Mongolian cashmere lies this conviction, one we were unwilling to compromise on.
Even when people say cashmere is good, there is such a wide range of cashmere out there. When I was young, I only knew the cashmere knitwear sold at mass-market stores, so the first time I slipped on a cashmere sweater made from material carefully selected at a proper shop, I remember feeling that the world had truly changed—the comfort was simply intoxicating.
We've heard from customers who say they'd like to actually try the material for themselves, which is why we prepared gloves and a scarf as an introduction to the line this time. Compared to clothing, they're easier to try, and since they cover a larger area of direct skin contact, we thought they would make it easier to feel just how wonderful this cashmere is. As they've handled the Mongolian cashmere items, the ZUTTO staff themselves have come to deeply appreciate their charm. These are knits you'll want not only for yourself, but for someone dear to you as well.
Cashmere may indeed require a bit more care than other items. But the luxurious feeling of bringing cashmere into your everyday life is something nothing else can replace. Because it is such a delicate item, we hope you'll feel free to consult us directly about repairs for your ZUTTO Mongolian cashmere knitwear, should the need ever arise. We hope this offers even a small measure of reassurance as you enjoy using it.
