A Gift from Africa: The Story of Beautiful Beaded Sandals

Sandals, embroidered with beads, stitch by careful stitch.

A look that catches your eye instantly and leaves you spellbound.

They possess a beauty and warmth that feels almost like a work of art.

This time, let's follow the story behind these sandals, which are connected to the Spanish shoe brand PIKOLINOS.

Kenya, in Africa, lies about 10,000 kilometers from Japan.

It's a land where vast savannas and countless wild animals coexist with peoples speaking more than 40 different languages.

The Maasai, who live by their own distinct traditional culture and values, are one such people.

Their commitment to preserving tradition makes them a special presence even in modern Kenyan society, where Western lifestyles have become widespread.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a protected area in Kenya spanning roughly 1,500 square kilometers.

In the Maasai Mara, you can see hundreds of Maasai women, living in Kenya and Tanzania,

hand-embroidering leather in a scene that unfolds across the landscape.

Here, women are shown at work making PIKOLINOS sandals.

This is part of the "Maasai Project," which began as an initiative to support the economic independence of African women.

Beneath acacia trees, Maasai women embroider leather with beads.

PIKOLINOS's beautiful bead-embroidered Maasai Collection

is part of the "Maasai Project," launched in 2008 as an activity that "collaborates with" rather than simply "donates to" Maasai women, in support of their economic independence.

It represents a fusion of "social contribution + fashion."

A leader of one Maasai tribe, William, worked continuously toward the goal of economic independence for his tribe and for Maasai women in particular,

and it was through a Spanish NPO that he encountered PIKOLINOS, setting this project into motion.

It's said that without him, this project simply wouldn't exist—so William's contribution is truly immeasurable.

Maasai women who needed a means of income—whether for drinking water, medicine, or their children's education—

joined the project,

and through it, Maasai women were able to earn a stable income for the very first time.

The Maasai Collection is designed in Spain, where PIKOLINOS's headquarters is located,

and the cut leather is then sent to the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

There, Maasai women embroider designs and symbols that express their tribe's cultural identity

onto the PIKOLINOS leather.

The vividly colored beadwork, with its distinctly African color combinations,

is a skill Maasai women learn from their parents and grandmothers from childhood.

Each color used symbolizes an element of the natural world.

For the Maasai, whose clothing is essentially draped fabric, colorful beaded accessories

may well be an essential element for enjoying fashion.

The carefully embroidered beaded leather is then sent back to Spain,

where it is made into finished products and sold around the world.

Now, PIKOLINOS, the brand we're featuring here, is one of Spain's most well-known shoe makers,

sold in more than 65 countries around the world.

Its trademark is the "red goose"—a bird that can travel across water, land, and sky.

Just as this bird moves freely between three worlds and enjoys life,

the brand hopes to remain flexible and be embraced by people everywhere.

The company was founded in 1984 by Juan Perán, now its Honorary Chairman.

He was quite small in stature, and in the company's early days, an Italian customer he met

called him "Piccolo" (meaning "small" in Italian),

which is said to be the origin of the company and brand name "PIKOLINOS."

The brand's product philosophy is "Naturally Good," built around three pillars:

1) Design and comfort

2) Soft, high-quality leather

3) Handcraftsmanship

By combining these three elements, PIKOLINOS creates shoes that are comfortable, refined, and durable.

Since PIKOLINOS shoes are fundamentally designed with "wearability" in mind,

the brand generally uses relaxed shoe lasts and low-resilience insoles.

Beyond that, PIKOLINOS has also placed great emphasis on fair trade with countries facing economic disadvantages.

The Maasai Collection introduced above is one part of this effort, made possible through collaboration with Maasai women.

Rich in character, with a distinctive design.

We're offering the Beaded Sandal 0897 series, perfect for adding a subtle accent to any outfit,

and the Beaded Thong Sandal 0950 series, featuring bold embroidery across the top of the foot.

◆Beaded Sandal 0897

From left, the colors are 【BLACK】, 【OLMO/RED】, and 【BRAN/DY】—three options in all.

What catches the eye is the careful bead embroidery adorning the high-quality leather,

That's not all when it comes to PIKOLINOS sandals, known for their comfortable fit.

Despite their cool, airy construction, the leather strap extending from the ankle holds the foot securely in place.

The wedge heel, about 1cm high, makes for easy walking. You can also clearly see the plush leather insole.

There's elastic at the ankle area. This makes it easy to slip your foot in, greatly reducing the stress of putting the sandals on.

◆Beaded Thong Sandals 0950

From left, the colors are 【BRAN/DY】, 【BLACK】, and 【OLMO】.

A bold embroidery design adorns the top of the foot.

It gives a simple style a distinctly summery, gorgeous look.

The shape is a thong sandal, designed to be hooked over the big toe.

By widely covering the top of the foot and securing the width of the foot with a leather strap,

blisters are less likely to occur, allowing for stable walking.

Also, the heel has a zipper closure and is entirely covered in leather.

These too have a plush insole and a wedge heel of about 1cm.

You can tell they're carefully made.

Every pair of shoes comes with a sponge for shoe care.

It makes you want to take good care of them and use them for a long, long time.

In each and every embroidered stitch, it feels as if the smiles, songs, and chatter of Maasai women are alive and breathing.

While preserving their culture and way of life in their familiar surroundings,

these women have learned about fashion, manufacturing processes, and how to manage quality.

Their creations seem to convey the strength, vitality, and identity of the Maasai people.

A simple yet eye-catching design, vivid colors reminiscent of the Maasai Mara,

and traditional hand-sewn beaded embroidery of the Maasai people.

These are sure to become your favorite footwear this summer.
