Winter brings increasing cold, and a warm coat becomes essential for going out. Even those who like to rotate through several coats to match their outfits often find that thick wool coats can be stiff and heavy, leading to stiffness in the shoulders and neck. Once you experience the unbeatable combination of lightness and warmth that down offers, you won't want to go back.
This time, we're introducing carefully crafted down coats from NANGA, a Japanese down wear brand. It's a good idea to prepare one before the depths of winter arrive. And this year, NANGA is running a gift campaign. Customers who purchase any of the down wear items introduced in this article will receive, while supplies last, a NANGA x Gear Aid repair patch as a gift.
NANGA's repair patch is like a band-aid for your garment—should the fabric surface ever get torn, it can be patched up with ease. There's no extra cost involved, and it's a gentle, eco-friendly way to mend your clothes, giving you peace of mind for those unexpected moments. Just like keeping spare buttons on hand, it might be a good idea to tuck one away in your sewing box for when you need it. When thinking about sustainable living, ideas like remaking, redyeing, darning, and embroidery—making good use of items that, while no longer in their original pristine condition, are still perfectly usable—are both important and welcome.
NANGA is a Japanese manufacturer that makes sleeping bags favored by professional mountaineers. Since climbing snowy mountains carries real risk to life, the brand takes its responsibility for craftsmanship seriously, paying careful attention to the materials and stitching used. Above all, they are particular about the down itself, the key component, using generous amounts of carefully selected European white duck down (with certificate of origin). The FP (fill power) rating, a measure of down quality, comes in at 760FP. Generally, 550FP is considered high-quality down, but NANGA uses down that far exceeds that figure. The higher the number, the more air the down can trap, giving it greater resilience and loft. In other words, it means high warmth can be achieved with less down, resulting in a lighter finish—this is exactly what allows NANGA down coats to combine "lightness" and "warmth."
The down vest, worn under a thin coat, weighs just 130g, while the down cardigan with sleeves weighs 190g—about the same as an ordinary smartphone. As for outerwear, the "Unisex Aurora Stand Collar Down Coat" weighs approximately 615g, comparable to a thick sweater. This shows just how much lighter it is compared to wool coats, which commonly weigh over 1kg for a long coat.
NANGA's Women's Shawl Collar Down Coat has a sleeker fit around the arms and shoulders, reducing that "puffy" feeling. The mature, elegant shawl collar softens the casual look typical of down, adding sophistication as well as extra warmth around the neck.
A button and loop at the collar allow you to close it up around the neck for even more warmth. The inside of the cuffs feature a double layer that blocks cold air from sneaking in at the sleeve openings. In addition to the zipper, there's also a flap with a snap button, which further prevents wind from getting in from the front. Realizing that these small details, layered together, contribute to the overall warmth—beyond just the warmth of the down itself—makes this thoughtful attention to detail all the more delightful.
This down jacket combines warmth and safety, making it a perfect recommendation for winter camping. That said, its appearance is stylish, with the distinctively matte texture of TAKIBI fabric. It also works wonderfully as an everyday down jacket, whether you're out and about with your kids or otherwise. Cold-weather measures go beyond the material itself and extend to the construction as well. The cuffs are fitted with elastic and can be adjusted with velcro, blocking cold air from entering through the sleeve openings.
Beyond outerwear, we'd also like to recommend thin inner down pieces. Inner down has become a staple in recent years—useful as light outerwear in early autumn, and as a cardigan-like layer under thin outer coats in winter, making it a highly versatile item with many uses. If you have an outer piece you love but find a bit too cold to wear in the depths of winter, adding an inner down layer lets you keep wearing it through the season.
Inner down comes in both a vest and a cardigan style. It can also be worn at home as a layer over your room wear. Its lightness, softness, and warmth make it a welcome feature not just for going out, but also for relaxing time at home.
