When you wake up in the morning wondering what to wear, most people probably check the day's weather first—how warm it will get, whether rain is expected—before choosing clothes, shoes, and accessories to match.
Autumn, in particular, brings a big difference between morning-and-evening temperatures and daytime warmth, so choosing the wrong outfit can easily leave you with a cold. This is the season when outerwear like cardigans and hoodies really starts to earn its keep—easy to take off the moment you feel warm, and just as easy to throw back on the moment you feel a chill.

Have you heard of the term "clothing index"? It's a number published daily by the Japan Weather Association for each region, offering guidance on the clothing and layering suited to that day's temperature and climate. If you plan your outfits and accessories around the day's expected high temperature in this way, choosing what to wear each morning should go more smoothly—and with fewer mistakes.
Here is a general guide to the relationship between temperature and clothing:
26°C–29°C: Base your outfit on short sleeves, but keep a lightweight piece of outerwear on hand in case of a sudden chill.
21°C–25°C: The dividing line between short and long sleeves. Wear short sleeves on sunny days, long sleeves on cloudy or rainy ones. Either way, bring something to throw on over it.
16°C–20°C: A season for enjoying long-sleeve layering. Outerwear is needed outdoors, but a single long-sleeve layer is enough indoors.
12°C–15°C: The chill really sets in. Prepare a jacket to wear over long-sleeve layers.
*This is only a general guide. Individual differences and regional climate variations also apply.
Even when the day's high stays in the upper 20s°C, mornings and evenings can suddenly turn cold during this changing season—and that's often when people catch colds. Even if you're wearing short sleeves or a thin long-sleeve cut-and-sew top, it's reassuring to carry something to layer on top, so you can slip it on the moment you start to feel a chill.
And as autumn deepens further, outerwear like cardigans and hoodies takes center stage in your outfit. As the season moves from autumn into winter, this outerwear gradually shifts to becoming an inner layer beneath a coat, so it's important to choose pieces that will serve you well for a long stretch of the coming season. Let's think about the types, silhouettes, and materials of outerwear.

【Crew Neck Cardigan】
Cardigan: Crew Neck Cardigan
Inner: Turtleneck cut-and-sew top
Pants: Cotton roll-up pants
Shoes: T-strap shoes DAISY/Marron patent
Start with a single crew neck cardigan. Choose a hip-length one, and its versatile length makes it easy to mix and match. You can pair it with a wide range of inner layers, from turtlenecks and crew neck cut-and-sew tops to collared shirts. Made from 100% cotton, it can also be worn longer through the seasons if you adjust the material of the inner layer—cotton, wool, and so on—to suit the weather.
The monochrome border pattern shown here is a slightly more design-focused take on the crew neck cardigan. You might think patterned tops are hard to style, but this cardigan from tricotage de marmoutier features black ribbing along the neckline, the vertical button line, the hem, and the sleeves, which pulls in and tightens what could otherwise be a loose, spread-out border pattern.
Of course, there are also solid black and white cardigans available.
tricotage de marmoutier is a comfortable cut-and-sew brand born from a long-established French factory. Its pieces are knitted using a technique called MAILLE, a circular knitting method that produces a tube shape with no seam allowance (side seam) under the arms or elsewhere. This means no bulkiness when worn—the fabric clings to the body for a fit that creates a clean, sleek silhouette. It's also thin and highly stretchy, so you barely feel any pulling when you move, which is another welcome quality.
【Long Cardigan】
Cardigan: Long Cardigan Midi Cardigan NAVY
Skirt: Knit border skirt LEF173008
Shirt: OVER SIZE PULLOVER shirt
Shoes: Tassel shoes BROWN
If you want a cardigan that feels more truly autumn-winter, go for a long one. It creates a vertical silhouette that doesn't spread out sideways, giving you a clean, streamlined line to enjoy. Since it covers the hips and thighs, it also helps protect against the cold. Yet because it's still a cardigan rather than a coat, it has an easy, casual feel, and doesn't seem out of place even when worn indoors.
The Midi Cardigan NAVY from INIS MEAIN is a long cardigan with a simple, clean-lined design and just the right length, giving it an elegant impression. The drape that forms on either side conceals the top and bottom you're wearing underneath to some degree, so even patterned or colorful pieces don't stand out awkwardly—the cardigan softens and blends them in, which is another nice touch.
The shawl collar stands up slightly at the neckline, so even a knit cardigan doesn't look overly casual—perfect for a mature woman's wardrobe.
INIS MEAIN (Inishmaan) is a knit brand that, true to its name, still exists today on Inishmaan Island. It is a knitwear maker that continues to produce high-quality knits locally, using carefully selected fibers. Although knits with similar designs to the Aran knits handed down on the Aran Islands, including Inishmaan Island, have come to be mass-produced outside the Aran Islands, INIS MEAIN protects its production with the conviction that the techniques and traditions of knitwear manufacturing that remain on the Aran Islands must never be allowed to disappear.
【An Oversized Silhouette Parka】
Parka: Aspero Cotton Cardigan Parka
T-shirt: T-shirt THE HANDMAIDS TALE
Pants: Shetland Wool Linen Gaucho Pants
Boots: plus by chausser Side Gore Boots BR
The parka is one of the classic outerwear staples.
It's such a familiar item that we tend to overlook the idea of "choosing" one carefully, but precisely because it's a staple, it's worth adding a piece with a silhouette that sets it apart to your wardrobe.
The Aspero Cotton Cardigan Parka from FACTORY is a parka made with generous amounts of fabric, designed to be worn oversized.
The generously long length means that when zipped up, the fabric gathers around the waist, raising the visual center of gravity, while unzipped, it creates a clean, streamlined silhouette. The thick front placket connecting to the hood serves as an accent, and the rounded lines give the whole piece a soft, fashion-forward feel. Parkas tend to give a strongly casual impression, but thanks to its fine details, the Aspero Cotton Cardigan Parka from FACTORY brings a stylish nuance simply by being worn. Pair it with a dress or refined boots, and you'll create a new kind of parka styling that goes beyond mere casualness.
The fabric used is 100% Aspero cotton. This is a winter cotton with an almost animal-hair-like feel, made from high-micron cotton that grows in the highlands of Peru in South America and is the finest cotton in the world. In addition, the thick-gauge inlay knitting technique used gives the fabric a natural, fluffy texture.

【A Stole and Cardigan in One: 2-Way Design】
Stole: RACCOON Stole
Cut-and-sew: Plain Boat Neck L/S LADIES
Pants: Brushed Wide Pants
Shoes: Low-cut Sneakers White
Let us introduce a slightly unusual piece of outerwear. Worn as a cardigan, it looks like a vest; wrapped around the neck, it becomes a stole. This is the RACCOON Stole from C.T.plage.
When spread out, it's a rectangular stole, but it has openings for your arms, making it a 2-way item that can also be worn with sleeves through, like outerwear. What's more, when worn as outerwear, it covers not just the shoulders but also the upper arms, providing excellent protection against the cold. The fabric naturally gathers softly around the neck, creating drape and a beautifully falling line from top to bottom.
The material used is a yarn called RACCOON, which is lightweight, retains body heat, and is extremely warm. It's characterized by a soft, fuzzy texture that feels pleasant against the skin, and offers a feminine texture and coloring to enjoy. The colors—pink, camel, gray, navy, and more—are all gentle, soft hues.
In the depths of winter, it can even be worn underneath a coat, and it works equally well as an inner layer, an outer layer, or a stole.
C.T.plage is a Japanese knit brand with the concept of "unassuming yet distinctive knitwear." Within simple designs that are easy to wear every day, it adds a unique nuance to the silhouette that you won't find elsewhere. Not only the RACCOON Stole, but every C.T.plage item creates a remarkably beautiful silhouette when worn. The designs truly consider "the wearer and the moment of wearing," and the meticulous thought behind them never fails to impress us each season.
【Poncho】
Poncho: Fair Isle Poncho
Knit: SOFT WOOL Crew Neck Sweater
Skirt: Cotton Gathered Skirt
Bag: Canvas Mini Tote
Boots: plus by chausser Side Gore Boots BR
If there's one piece of outerwear striking enough to be the star of an outfit all on its own, it's the poncho. Since it's pulled on over the head, unlike front-opening outerwear, it's often thought to have drawbacks in terms of putting it on and taking it off, but the poncho has its own kind of functionality.
For example, when wearing a thick knit underneath, putting on a cardigan can make the shoulders and arms feel cramped and bulky, but with a poncho—which you don't put your arms through—there's no need to worry about that. The poncho is an item that combines a striking visual impact with this kind of practicality.
In the depths of winter, you can use it in place of a stole—simply pull it on over your coat, and your shoulders, arms, and back will stay warm.
The GILBERT WILSON Fair Isle poncho is made from high-quality merino wool and finished with the traditional peat water (soft water) wash, giving it a distinctively soft texture. Skilled artisans check each and every stitch as they work, resulting in an exceptionally tight, fine finish. The flawless Fair Isle knitting is like a work of art in itself. Despite the relatively thick fabric, it wraps the skin smoothly and gently, which is why it is widely recognized as a top-quality knit.
GILBERT WILSON was founded in the late 1800s in the HAWICK district, a town known throughout Scotland as home to long-established, traditional knit makers. The brand continues to produce wool products suited to modern life while carrying on the classic patterns passed down in Fair Isle, located in the north of Scotland, along with the traditional techniques of the HAWICK district.

The word "coordigan" is a coined term combining "coat" and "cardigan," referring to an outer layer that can be worn as easily as a cardigan. It has the same feel as a long cardigan, and its presence makes it a central piece of any outfit. Since it often has no buttons, ease of putting it on and taking it off is not a problem even with a long length.
The Bebrain coordigan makes generous use of fabric across the front body, with tucks placed at the shoulders that let the material drape softly and beautifully, creating a relaxed yet elegant silhouette. The collar is a shawl collar type, standing up at the back of the neck to guard against the cold while flowing into a clean line that connects to the drape at the front.
Since it comes with a belt, cinching the waist and tying it at the front gives a feminine look, while tying it loosely at the back lets the front drape show beautifully.
What truly defines this coordigan is, without a doubt, the fabric used. Known as "Balance Circular," it is a special knit fabric trademarked by Maruwa Knit Co., Ltd. of Wakayama Prefecture, created by forming nylon into the warp threads to fuse woven fabric with knit — a technique called "WOVEN KNIT."
Balance Circular has the stretch of a knit fabric with just the right amount of tension, offering a comfortable fit that moves with the body. Because the material also has a high recovery rate, it is said to resist losing its shape from movement, and areas that bend, such as the elbows, are less likely to show creases. Since it can be used simply by cutting, with no need for edge finishing, it requires no seam allowance or thread for that purpose — meaning there are no seam allowances at the shoulders and back seams, areas that are normally bulky with fabric, achieving flat seams.
Thanks to the absence of seam allowances and the ability to use raw-cut edges, the entire coordigan ends up lighter by the weight of one smartphone — which is quite surprising.

An outer layer is essential for enjoying fashion during the short autumn season. Choose an item that lets you handle the temperature differences between morning, noon, and night comfortably and smartly, without disrupting your outfit. By keeping on hand a variety of pieces — cardigans, hoodies, and others with different silhouettes and lengths — you'll always have an outer layer ready that matches any coordination.
Let it take the lead as an outer layer in autumn, and once winter arrives, put it to further use as an inner layer beneath a coat.
