This time we're introducing ZUTTO's original bag, the "2-Way Square Bag Kinari." A staff member who uses it regularly shares her thoughts on how it feels to use.

A bag you'll want the moment you see it in person

The 2-Way Square Bag is one of ZUTTO's long-selling items. It's a 2-way bag with both a hand-carry handle and a shoulder strap, available in Kinari (natural) and Navy. The body is made of No. 9 canvas, while numata leather (naturally tanned cowhide) is used for parts that need extra strength, such as the base, the corners of the bag, and the zipper pull. No. 9 canvas is a sturdy material that won't wear out even after long use, while gradually becoming softer and easier to handle. Numata leather, meanwhile, is a material known for how strongly it shows aging among leathers—it's fun to watch it change from its initial beige color to a rich amber tone over time. Anticipating that the bag as a whole would develop a pleasing patina with age, each of the metal fittings is finished in antique gold, which is another key detail.

Among ZUTTO staff, this bag is actually famous as "the bag you want the moment you see it in person". At our physical store (currently closed due to the pandemic), customers who had come to look at other products would often pick this one up, exclaim "Oh, this is cute!", and end up taking it home. One story we heard was of a male customer who chose it as a gift for his wife, saying, "My wife isn't really into fashion, but I'd love for her to carry a bag like this!" We've also heard stories of people noticing this bag on someone else and asking, "Where's that from?"

(Staff M): This is a bag I find myself reaching for often, since it's easy to coordinate with any outfit. As you probably know, this style of canvas bag has been around for a long time, working equally well with denim or a dress. A canvas tote you use and use hard is an eternal classic—and I think that's exactly why it's so easy to picture how it will look with an outfit. This particular square bag, in particular, is easy to use all year round: it's a nice alternative to all-leather bags that can feel a bit heavy in midsummer, and to all-canvas bags that can feel a bit too light in winter.

It also pairs surprisingly well with colorful dresses in blue, red, or green, or with prints like Liberty florals or gingham checks—the kind of colorful pieces that can be tricky to accessorize.

What Makes It "Just Right," According to a Regular User, Part 2: A relaxed, effortless kind of just-right

(Staff M): Of course you can use it for commuting, but personally, I think it's also lovely when a grown-up carries it casually on a laid-back day. Since it uses numata leather, the color changes as you use it, and overall it's not the flashiest-looking bag. It's never going to be the star of an outfit, but I feel that its understated look, its relaxed and unpretentious design, is exactly what makes it just right. I often pair it with the ITALO CARLI strap sandals in BEIGE that I bought a few years ago.

What Makes It "Just Right," According to a Regular User, Part 3: Size and how you carry it

(Staff M): Something we've heard often from customers who've brought this bag home is that "the size is just right." I feel the same way. Because of its square shape, it doesn't get in the way when worn over the shoulder, and even worn crossbody, it doesn't take up much width. I think it's easy to wear even for people who are shorter in height. Since it stands upright on its own, you can set it down on a chair at a café or restaurant without it looking sloppy, and you can take things out without everything getting jumbled together. It's not too small and not too big—it's wide enough to hold a standard long wallet, and tall enough to fit a 500ml plastic bottle or a small water bottle. I think it's the complex interplay of all these elements that gives the bag its refined look.

Personally, I like shortening the strap and wearing it over the shoulder. If you look at the photo, you'll see that the bag doesn't stick out from my body at all. That means it doesn't get in the way on the train or in crowded places. I don't carry it by hand much, but it's reassuring to have a bag that still gives you the freedom to change how you carry it.

Bonus: The Aging of Numata Leather

We compared a staff member's bag—cherished and used daily for a year—with a brand-new nume leather (untreated, vegetable-tanned leather) bag, and the difference in the leather was immediately obvious. The new bag was a pale beige with a matte texture, while the well-loved bag had developed a subtle sheen and a slightly deeper color. Since the staff member hadn't applied any leather cream or conditioner, this is a genuinely natural patina from everyday use.
