Everyday luxury. A story of the start of winter, spent with ZUTTO's cashmere knits

There's a feeling of winter drawing near, step by step. As you find yourself longing for a warm cup of milk tea, or switching your room's furnishings from cotton to wool, this is a season with many chances to feel the shift of the seasons in everyday scenes—and a warm knit sweater suits it perfectly. A knit you'll want to keep in the most easily reached spot in your closet, the special place reserved for autumn and winter. A quality suited to everyday wear, paired with a simplicity that makes you want to wear it again and again without a second thought. We wanted to deliver a comfortable knit that skillfully brings these two qualities together. It was from this wish that ZUTTO's cashmere sweaters were born.

This time, we've created three types: a "V-neck sweater," a "turtleneck sweater," and a "long cardigan." During that first week of winter, it takes a little courage to step out of a warm room into the crisp, cold winter air—but we hope these knits make thinking about your daily outfit something to look forward to. Here, we introduce the story woven into these three cashmere knits.

Cashmere clothing and scarves, carefully folded away in the back of the closet and worn only on special occasions, certainly have their appeal—but we wanted to deliver a sweater that fits naturally into everyday life, letting you feel that comfort day to day. That was the wish that set this knitwear project in motion. But to begin with, why does cashmere knitwear carry such a distinct character, unlike anything else?

Cashmere is light and airy, soft, with a uniquely smooth texture. While wool products can be made from the hair of various animals—sheep, angora, camel, alpaca, mohair, and more—cashmere is said to have the finest fiber of them all. This fineness gives the fabric its suppleness and smoothness, and because the yarn itself has a strong "resilience," garments cared for properly can be enjoyed for a long time while keeping loss of shape, sagging, and stretching to a minimum.

Cashmere comes from a type of goat raised in arid regions where grass is hard to grow, with an annual temperature range of 70°C (from 35°C to -35°C) and only 100 to 200mm of rainfall per year. The soft undercoat that protects the goats from this harsh natural environment is combed and gathered during the spring molting season, yielding just 150 to 200g of down per goat. Because of this rarity, cashmere is sometimes called "the jewel of fibers."

Cashmere knitwear, meant to be worn with lasting affection over time, is one item we at ZUTTO have very much wanted to introduce. Making this knitwear began with choosing a factory capable of realizing truly comfortable wear.

The precious raw wool comes from Inner Mongolia, one of the most trusted cashmere-producing regions in the world. We commissioned production to a knitwear specialty factory capable of integrated manufacturing, starting from cashmere fiber raised in this nature-rich region under extremely strict management and inspection. This Chinese knitwear factory, having inherited advanced production techniques from around the world and reached a level of true mastery, also handles knitwear manufacturing for renowned luxury department stores across Europe and America—continuing to produce knitwear that is trustworthy both in name and in substance.

With 100% cashmere products, purity is naturally a concern—whether any non-cashmere fibers have been mixed in. But this cashmere, produced through an integrated process from raw material processing to finishing, is a reliably tested material that undergoes rigorous inspection. While the general standard for purity is 95% or higher in Europe and 97% or higher in Japan, this cashmere boasts an inspection result of 99.99%.

The turtleneck is such a classic shape that nearly everyone owns at least one. For all three knits we've made this time, including this turtleneck sweater, we adopted a 12-gauge thickness. This is a "not too thin, not too thick" gauge that won't feel bulky under a coat, while still providing the warmth needed for the depths of winter. It's a piece where you can truly feel the comfort of fine-gauge knitwear.

Pair it casually with jeans and sneakers, dress it up neatly with a knee-length pleated skirt, or style it on-trend with high-waisted wide-leg pants—the styling possibilities are wide open.

With a V-neck, the impression can vary greatly depending on the angle and depth of the front opening, so we chose a shallow neckline that looks effortlessly good worn on its own. Though basic in design, we created a relaxed silhouette with a dropped-shoulder pattern. Comfortable whether worn alone or layered over a shirt, this V-neck knit is also recommended to collect in multiple colors.

We've also prepared a long cardigan that lets you fully savor the quality of cashmere as a material. With slightly wider armholes and cuffs that taper in gently, we added a touch of feminine softness while keeping it practical with pockets on both sides. Simply throw it over a casual cut-and-sew top or a plain shirt, and it instantly adds a touch of elegance.

A knit that's easy to incorporate into winter dressing, and whose comfort becomes clearer the longer you wear it—it's simple to describe in words, but since basic knit sweaters are everywhere, what really matters is how they can actually be styled, and in what scenes they can accompany the person wearing them. And with cashmere in particular, compatibility with other items and how to care for it at home become key points too. Let's take a look here at an actual week in winter, incorporating ZUTTO's three cashmere knits.

I had a vague idea from checking the weather forecast, but today feels especially chilly. On a morning like this, at the start of the week, it feels good when your outfit comes together effortlessly. Paired with a feminine look of a denim skirt, tights, and heeled boots, the quality of the cashmere knit really stands out.

The impression a V-neck sweater gives can change dramatically depending on how open the collar is, but with this knit we paid careful attention to achieving a moderate depth and V-shaped curve that looks beautiful whether worn alone or layered with another piece underneath. Worn by itself, it shows just the right amount of collarbone, and the balance works well even when paired with a necklace—that's the kind of opening we designed.

In the coordinate example above, a thin shirt with tucks at the neck is worn underneath, creating a layered style with a bit of a twist. It's precisely because the design is simple and never tiring that there's room left for creative styling.

What to wear on days when you're heading out for a work meeting, or when you have plans to meet someone and feel a bit nervous about it—no matter how many times you've faced this dilemma, it never gets any easier. On days that don't call for anything too dressed-up, yet shouldn't be too casual either, a turtleneck sweater is the answer. When you pull the whole look together in a single tone like this, the sheen and distinctive smoothness unique to cashmere create contrast, giving a sharp, polished impression.

In the coordinate shown in the photo, a shirt is worn underneath for a layered style, but once winter truly sets in and the weather turns even colder, a jacket layered over the turtleneck also comes together beautifully. Here too, the advantage of a fine-gauge knit—"not too thin, not too thick"—comes into play. At 12 gauge, it doesn't bulk up under a jacket or coat, making it perfect for layering.

It would be ideal if we could take our time choosing our outfit every single day, but with busy days that's not always easy to manage. By midweek, it can feel like a chore to carefully plan out a coordinate, and sometimes you even oversleep against your will. On days like that, the reassuring thing about a cashmere V-neck sweater is that even an extremely simple look—just a top, denim pants, and flat shoes—comes together naturally.

We introduced a layered style with the same V-neck sweater earlier, but because the collar opening is designed to look beautiful even worn alone, it also comes together stylishly when worn simply like this. Just wrap on a stole or scarf, and your winter look is complete.

When it comes to essential points for everyday wear, comfort matters just as much as visual beauty. For instance, on a day when the week is halfway through and you plan to tackle a backlog of desk work all at once, a high-neck sweater you can wear without any stress is just the thing.

A high-neck sweater is a wardrobe staple that looks sharp even worn alone, but if you wear it for a long time, the neck area can start to feel scratchy and become a source of stress. Whether or not something feels scratchy against bare skin depends largely on the quality of the knit yarn itself, but with high-neck designs, small details can also determine how comfortable it feels to wear.

In a typical high-neck sweater, a seam (called linking) is created where the two ends of the knit fabric are joined together to form the tube shape of the neck. This joint is often placed at an inconspicuous spot such as the back of the neck or under the arm, but it tends to be a drawback—it can feel scratchy against bare skin or affect the silhouette of the neck area. ZUTTO's cashmere turtleneck sweater is crafted to form the tubular neck section without creating this seam at all. It may be in details like these—invisible, yet noticeable the longer you wear a piece—that the true value of a knit is put to the test.

Friday night, dinner with a close friend after work. The following Saturday, a leisurely stroll to a nearby cafe. Both are everyday scenes where you can relax and dress in a way that feels like yourself, and having just one cashmere knit on hand lets you wear an air of refined elegance even when dressing casually.

On days when a long-sleeve top alone is enough during the daytime and you don't need a coat, but mornings and evenings are still chilly, having a long cardigan on hand comes in handy.

The top featured in this coordination is actually the same turtleneck sweater introduced earlier in the work scene. Simply swapping the ankle-length slim pants for a border-patterned skirt, and heeled pumps for sneakers, gives a noticeably more relaxed impression. And yet, the look never feels sloppy—achieving a refined finish while staying relaxed is one of the great advantages unique to cashmere knits.

Cashmere, with its soft fibers, tends to develop pilling rather easily—that's its one drawback. But with proper care at home, you can continue to enjoy its wonderful feel against the skin. While avoiding wearing the same knit on consecutive days is key to making it last longer, it's only natural that your favorite knits end up being worn more often. Here, we've summarized the key points of care worth checking. The trick is to do a little care after each wearing, while reserving your weekend off-day for a more thorough check for noticeable stains or loose threads.

▼Things to Keep in Mind Every Day

・Avoid wearing the same piece every day, and be careful not to create localized friction.

・Avoid strong pulling or vigorous movement.

・Dark colors may transfer onto other items through friction. Avoid pairing them with light-colored clothing or bags.

▼Everyday Care

・Gently brush with a clothing brush to smooth the nap, removing dust while also preventing pilling.

・If the characteristic odor of animal fiber bothers you, or if the smell of food and such has transferred onto the garment, use a deodorizing spray made for clothing to care for it.

▼Wash With Water, or Dry Cleaning?

Cashmere is naturally a fiber that can be washed with water, but washing a cashmere knit at home risks damaging its texture due to fiber tangling and shape distortion during dehydration. For this reason, we recommend having it dry-cleaned each season.

It's also important to avoid accidents like sweating heavily while wearing it or getting caught directly in the rain. But if it does get wet by accident, or after spraying it with a clothing spray so that it holds some moisture, the ideal way to dry it is laid flat, as shown in the photo.

If you don't have a flat-drying rack or otherwise find it difficult to arrange the space, we recommend hanging it on a hanger for only a short time, and otherwise storing it by folding it carefully and stacking it in a flat spot. Precisely because cashmere isn't something you can easily send out for cleaning very often, checking its condition frequently and giving it proper care is what leads to preserving its texture for longer.

So, what did you think of the story behind ZUTTO's original cashmere knits? That crisp, chilly morning that makes you hunch your shoulders and shiver without meaning to; that faint touch of gloom when stepping out of a warm room into the cold. Facing the cold is a bother, but it's curious how simply having a favorite cashmere sweater in your closet can help you push past that chill and enjoy the season instead.

There's still time before winter fully arrives, but the seasons change seamlessly, and before you know it, the shift will be here. This autumn and winter, why not get a head start and feel the changing of the seasons through a cashmere knit for everyday wear?
